The Pros And Cons Of Puritan Society

Last year, on Twitter, a woman named Justine Sacco posted tweets about her trip to South Africa. She tweeted racist comments such as, “Weird German Dude: You’re in First Class. It’s 2014. Get some deodorant.” and “Going to Africa. Hope I don’t get AIDS. Just kidding. I’m white!” Because of her offensive comments, an individual responded back to Sacco with, “How did she get a PR job? Her level of racist ignorance belongs on Fox News!” Later that day, she became the number one worldwide trend on Twitter, got fired from her job, and suffered from severe humiliation. While her comments were offensive, she shouldn’t necessarily be hated by everyone. Her story is an example of our society’s tendency to harshly judge others unless they believe and act the same. This tendency in American culture was evident back in Puritan times all the way through …show more content…
As a matter of fact, America still suffers from these same flaws of the Puritan society of the 1600’s. The Puritans of the 1600’s and Americans today are certainly both judgmental. Nathaniel Hawthorne portrays the Puritan community as awfully ruthless towards Hester Prynne. For example, when Hester stood on the scaffold, several women rebuke her for being a “slutty” and impudent. They shun her because the whole town is aware that she committed adultery. Without knowing her story, they don’t pity her and believe she’s a horrendous person due to this one incident. They could have personally spoken to her and found out what kind of person she was before they criticized, but instead, Hester is labeled as a terrible person and is ostracized from the community. This kind of labeling still occurs in America right now. In the heat of the 2016 election, the President-elect Donald Trump said, “When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending the best.

In my thesis, I contend that the Puritans were successful in New England because they came with family and members of their community, the New England terrain helped farmers across the colony produce enough material to sustain themselves and the ability to trade with England, and the New England colony saw more independence from Britain than other colonies. One of the reasons for the Puritans’ success in England is because they were able to bring family members to the colony and they ventured with members of their former community. The ability to bring family members to the colony meant that women could take a larger role in society while the most men were working on their farms. This colony differed from the Jamestown settlement which almost failed disastrously due to disease and the first settlers were…

When Puritans settled the New England colonies in the 1600s after facing religious oppression back in England, time slowly begins to show how the oppressed become the oppressors. Puritanism is known as an immensely strict practice which led to many dissenters opposing them to be scrutinized. Salem’s unspoken social hierarchy, biased and oppressive theocracy, and its distaste to humankind set up the ideal conditions for the Salem Witch Trials to take place, turning the blame to the Puritan’s rule for allowing the murder of 19 innocent beings.…

The act of standing out to draw attention can be seen across any culture. The Puritan culture consisted of English descent who wanted religion to be completely separate from the state(Delbanco, Puritanism, History). The women in a Puritan society were in charge of caring for the children, therefore they spent most of their time doing work in the house; when it came to legal rights, they could not vote or own land(Deering, Women in Puritan Society, Study). The lack of desirability for the women in the Puritan settlements gave the girl’s motives for starting the holy war. Moreover, the witchcraft plague formed due to the resentment, cowardice and attention seeking actions of the girls in the community of Salem.…

The citizens of Salem were divided into two groups—those who wanted to leave Salem and form a new village, and those who wanted to stay together as one community. The citizens that wanted to leave consisted of families of farmers, and those that wanted to stay had relations to Salem's rich harbors. The farmers of Salem based their argument—about departing—on the truth that Salem's economy was legitimately very egocentric and thus contested the communal nature that Puritanism mandated. There were two families that were the heads of each group, with the Porters at the head of the farmers and the Putnams at the head of the wealthier population. Due to their different beliefs, the two families had grown a sort of rivalry.…

In a world much more advanced than that of the Puritans in the 17th century, the majority of Puritan ideas and rituals may appear unusual and strange, however, several of these ideas helped to shape American culture and identity into how it exists today. Numerous characteristics of modern Americans trace back to the ethics and ideas of the Puritans that first resided in America. In his article “Still Puritan After All These Years”, Matthew Hutson shows the American mind as largely guided by the philosophies of Puritans. An experiment performed with both Americans and Canadians with some test subjects exposed to ideas of salvation resulted in “the Americans — but not the Canadians — [solving] more anagrams with salvation on the mind.”…
