The Pros And Cons Of Prenatal Genetic Testing

Improved Essays
I believe that prenatal genetic testing should not be aloud. My main arguments against these tests is that they will promote more abortions and the presence of life threatening diseases causes more scientific advances. If prenatal gene tests were to become available at more hospitals, the number of people requesting these test would increase as well. Additionally, the number of abortions is directly related to the number of test administered. Parents who found out their child would have conditions like Tay-Sachs or Down syndrome would likely abort that child. This also raises the issue of parents determine hair or eye color of their child and aborting it in hopes of trying for a different color. This ability to know information of the child

(Blyth et al., 2008 & Dahl, 2007). This is essentially the assumption that parents will also want to choose other physical aspects of their child (e.g. hair/eye colour); further negating the unconditional love a parent is expected to have for their child (Blyth et al., 2008). As “reading” our genomes becomes more available, I think each person should have complete privacy over their genetic information. It’s their personal information, and it’s their right to share it if they’d like, but no one else besides immediate family should have the right to use their genetic information. Immediate family should be allowed rights too, because it could be helpful in making important decisions or in emergencies. Employers and insurers should absolutely not be able to reject someone based on their genome. That would be purely discrimination, weather it saves them money or not.…

Genetic engineering of designer babies is wrong not only because both unwanted traits and germline transmission of DNA can occur, but, lastly it is unpredictable and can cause an imbalance in the world. Once the genetically engineered enter into the world they can have a negative impact on the “regular people”. People cannot be sure how a baby that had cells manipulated and changed will act in society. There was a case where 30 genetically modified babies were born “healthy” after a series of experiments. Babies are not lab pets and should not be experimented on.…

Emily Oster said this “Prenatal testing is a complicated decision for many women, forcing us to confront concerns about a disabled child and risks of miscarriage.” What this tells us is any pregnant woman is susceptible to having a disabled child. The Ethics of Prenatal Genetic Modification Genetic engineering is a method of altering the genetic makeup of an organism with the intention of improving the organism. The technology that is used for this modification is still in its early stages, but was intended to be used in the manufacturing of insulin, various hormones, and antibodies, as well as disease research and gene therapy. This technology is beginning to encroach into reproduction, where it has the potential to be used to prevent certain sex-linked diseases and screen for embryos that are predisposed to certain genetic conditions. Once this technology is integrated into reproductive processes, a door will be opened for parents to have “designer babies,” which is a term that describes…

Prenatal Genetic Testing During a woman’s pregnancy, she is given the option to undergo testing to find out different information about her unborn child. Prenatal genetic testing has been around ever since the first historic test performed by Fuchs and Riis in 1956 on a sample of amniotic fluid. Prenatal genetic testing is often our first predictor of any health issues a baby might have and often a way to alleviate the fears of nervous future parents. Prenatal genetic testing originally was just used in order to identify the sex of the unborn child but over the decades evolved into extensive series of tests that are often used to screen for any birth defects and anomalies.…

Being able to pick and choose how your baby will look and what traits they will have, but that is a reality now. While many people can disagree this, that isn’t necessarily true. You can use genetic screening in an ethical way because you are able to find out if you can have a healthy baby. While it might end up costing the people who do it a lot of money up front, in the end it will not. If someone had a baby and genetically passes down a disease that they had, it might end up costing them more for care in the end, resulting in even more money being spent on medical bills.…

Genetic human identification and modification should be allowed, to a small extent. Genetic modification should be allowed if born with diseases or any other life-threatening factors. Genetic identification should be allowed to identify one’s birth gender, but transexuality (changing one’s gender) should not be allowed at birth. Genetic modification should be allowed if one is born with diseases so they can have a better life. For example, from the movie Gattaca, Vincent Anton Freeman was born with a life threatening heart problem.…
