Some of the disadvantages cited in educational literature is that this type of assessment has a narrow domain of assessment, lack of uniform standards and clear objectives, stronger reliance on subjective judgements, they can be expensive and time consuming (Merritt, 2015, p. 5), and it can be difficult to find space to store all products and materials needed for the portfolios (Beyhan, 2013, p. 49). Another disadvantage of portfolio assessments is that some teachers may not have the resources or knowledge to appropriately implement this type of assessment into the curriculum. “No matter how carefully have the content and objectives of the program have been prepared, the ones that will determine its efficiency are definitely the teachers to implement the program” (Beyhan, 2013, p. 49-50). A research done in 2009 showed that many teachers did not know how to grade the material in the portfolios or which material to include in portfolio assessments. It is a better way to determine where student’s strengths and weaknesses lie, provides clear evidence for parents to be presented with at parent-teacher conferences, and is a great tool for teachers to use for future planning and activities. Because of the variety of different types of portfolios, it is an appropriate assessment method for all learning styles and thus better reflects student knowledge.
