1.1 Research Background
Pornography is one of the largest businesses within the sexual industry, which has recently emerged as a new debate topic across different fields such as the academia and the legislation discussion. Previous research (e.g. Cooper, 1998; O’ Reilly, Knox and Zusman, 2007; Hald and Malamuth, 2008; Doran and Price, 2014) had overwhelmingly focused on the impacts of pornography consumption. The term ‘pornography’ was derived from the Greek word ‘pornographs’, which means the scripting or drawing about prostitutes (Dworkin, 1981). Although previous statistics reflected a high amount of revenues was generated from the Asian countries, particularly in China, studies on pornography consumption in Asian contexts are relatively under-researched. Hence, one of the purposes of this dissertation is to bridge the gap between western contexts and Asians contexts on pornography consumption. Given that there is a lack of research on pornography consumption in Chinese contexts, rationales for conducting a research targeting on Chinese adolescents’ opinions on pornography consumption are offered. Firstly, Chinese people constitute the largest population worldwide. Secondly, my cultural background (raising up in Macau and studying and living in the United Kingdom) have facilitated and influenced the interest on examining the consumption of pornography in a more multicultural dimension. Lastly, it is
