This is a great example of how police officers are leaders under the context of leadership for the greater good (McManus and Perucci 246). In chapter fourteen of McManus and Perruci’s book the concept of a leader and follower acting beyond their own interests and working to serve society (McManus and Perruci 246). Officer Holden’s death is an example of this concept. He had nothing to gain personally by pursuing this criminal, however, he became an officer to better society. He wanted to give back to his city and country (Southall and Goodman). The article mentions that officer Holden was an immigrant from Guyana, and when he moved here he wanted to become a police officer like his family (Southall and Goodman). He did not grow up in American society. In many South American countries there have been issues with military police forces. Therefore he would have had perceptions of the police different than someone who may have grown up in America. This could be improved in order to create a stronger argument. Despite controversy and a growing lack of support of the police the article is able to portray how police officers, specifically officer Holden, lead for the greater good. He did this losing his life to protect the citizens of East Harlem. Police officers work to better their communities and all of society. However, they are criticized and have been subject to attacks all over the country. Despite all the risk of being a law enforcement officer, they continue to do it for the betterment of society.
