Parents always make a huge impact on a child’s life. They’re there from the beginning of life and will always be there to support their child. With times changing it is difficult for parents to be there for their child in the beginning of life. Paternal leave is an option in the U.S., but only 3 states offer paid parental leave, which are California, New Jersey, and Rhode Island (United States Department of Labor). It is ideal for both parents to take parental leave but many times only the mother will take maternal leave because someone under the roof needs to bring in the money, which in many cases is the father. In other countries paid paternity leave is mandatory. Some fathers in the United States don’t even take any days off to spend with the child. Many don’t realize that paid paternal leave is very important, it can benefit the child, the parents, and businesses.
Let’s first start off with how parental leave benefits the new born. You’d believe that the child wouldn’t really get affected by parental paid leave, but in reality it can control the health and the cognitively of a child. When the mother isn’t feeling pressured to go back to work because she isn’t getting paid, then she is able to breastfeed more. Breastfeeding is a very important for a baby’s development the first few months of its life. The more a child get breastfed then it lessens the chance of the child getting chronic diseases, lessens natal mortality rate, obesity and other life threatening variables (United States Department of Labor). Even if the mother can 't breastfeed it is crucial for her and the baby to spend time together and bond. Fathers can also play a huge role in a baby’s life if he takes paternity leave.
