Although not as disadvantaging as others’ circumstances, being the child of divorced parents, who split when I was four years old, has brought significant challenges into my life. As a child, moving from one household to the other every other week was tiring and stressful. Historically, osteopathic medicine has focused on preventative care, evaluating the whole body and its’ systems, and intervening with the body’s natural healing processes as little as possible. This mindset and practice developed out of concern for some of the unsafe medical treatments in the past. Of course, we now know vastly more about the human body, how it functions, and the safety and efficacy of various medical treatments. In my opinion, the only noticeable differences today are the use of Osteopathic Manipulative Therapy (OMT), the heavier emphasis on preventative care, and a more cautious approach to dolling out certain medical treatments, such as prescriptions; although, this is now more common place in the healthcare field in …show more content…
Through undergraduate and graduate school, I have strengthened not only my basic science knowledge and then some, but also what to expect in a medical career. I know that being a physician requires a sincere dedication, the utmost physical and mental determination to succeed, and a strong desire to serve others. I have demonstrated these traits through my various extracurricular activities: from assisting patients in the surgical department at Providence Willamette Falls Medical Center and in the cardiovascular recovery area (CVRA) at Tulane medical Center, to regularly attending grand rounds and interacting with medical students, residents, and doctors. Furthermore, I believe my demeanor and personality is one most befitting for a
