Nuclear power, we have all heard of it. Or most of us have, nuclear power is created by nuclear fission (“Nuclear Power for the 21sr Century”). The process of uranium isotopes in a controlled environment being split. As you know any action takes energy and when energy is being used or changed a by-product is made. In most cases it is thermal energy, which is heat energy. That is exactly what is happening in a nuclear power plant. When one uranium isotope is split a chain reaction is created in the reactor core. One molecule splitting will result in three splitting, then eight splitting and so on and so forth. The reaction releases massive amounts of heat, which is used to boil heavy water(H20+deuterium), liquid sodium, or water. Nuclear plants …show more content…
The radioactivity affects whatever it touches, if it’s not properly handled. If anyone doesn’t know if something is radioactive that means that it is radiating with a dangerous aura that actually knocks holes in you DNA, which leads to irregular cell division and in most cases causes cancer or even death. Even if nuclear waste is properly handled there really isn’t any solid plan for the storage of it (“Issues & Controversies”). If there isn’t any plan for storage then how would it be logical to mass produce energy from nuclear power plants. The people who died from nuclear power plants were caused by accidents made by stupid people making even dumber decisions. We as the human race are smarter now and understand how things work more than we used to, and we have the technological advances show for it. I believe that nuclear power plants will advance so far, that we will find a use for the used uranium. If we make more nuclear plants it will open up many job opportunities, it isn't a one man show for a nuclear plant to run, it takes hundreds of workers for a plant to run. The scientists in the control room, security, and people searching for more uranium, and of course the workers making sure there aren't any leaks in the plant(“Issues and controversies”). Myth buster, how many people think that a nuclear power plant can explode? The answer is that they can’t! The control rods absorb the extra power so it can’t explode from pressure and when you hear a “meltdown” that refers to the uranium melting the core of the plant or the shielding.
