Fission is a reaction when the nucleus of an atom, gets a neutron, and then splits into two or more nuclei. This causes a release in significant amounts of energy as well as more neutrons. These neutrons then go on to split more nuclei and a chain reaction takes place. Fusion is basically the reverse process of fission. In this situation the nuclei collide instead and join together to form an atom larger than helium. Nuclear power plant use fission to produce very large amounts of energy. Enough to provide most of the world with electricity. It may sound like a great method, but it has many downfalls such as production of radiation that has been proven to cause cancer and death of wildlife. Unlike fossil fuel plants, which produce large quantities of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere each year, nuclear power plants don't spew out smoke. Electricity is created by splitting atoms in a series of nuclear reactions, otherwise known as nuclear fission. The white plumes rising from cooling towers are nothing more than steam created from the cooling system. Nuclear power is considered carbon-free and produces more electricity than other renewable resources such as solar energy and wind from generators. Scientists agree that greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide are building up in the atmosphere and are one of the main causes of the exponential increase in global temperatures. Although most of our world’s electricity comes from either burning fossil fuels or nuclear power plants to produce power, there are still better methods out there. Nuclear power isn't a solution to global warming. Rather, global warming is just a convenient rationale for an obsolete energy source that makes no sense when compared to the alternatives.
