One particularly notorious pesticide was called DDT. DDT was developed as the first synthetic pesticide and was used, with outstanding success, to ward off harmful insect borne diseases. Despite all of DDT is especially harmful to the environment due to biomagnification. “Biological magnification (or biomagnification) is the buildup of certain substances, such as DDT, in the bodies of organisms at higher trophic levels of food webs.” (McGraw). DDT would build up inside of organisms and over time, would cause cancer, infertility, stillbirths, nervous system damage, and many other detrimental problems. That ties in with Naled because it is possible for Naled to accumulate in the ecosystem, but due to it being sprayed by ULV (Ultra Low Volume) devices, it is highly unlikely to be found in high amounts, like DDT was. For one reason, Naled is very effective when it comes to eradicating pests. According to an article by the EPA, “Naled has been successfully used for many years in the mainland United States and has been effective in the ongoing effort to control mosquitoes carrying Zika, dengue, chikungunya, and other possible diseases in areas where these viruses have been identified.” (EPA1).
