There are many different beliefs on this topic, one of which is that it is an “offshoot phenomenon of another psychiatric problem.” (Goldberg). One of the major issues in the controversy is that “patients described as having DID are highly hypnotizable, and therefore are very suggestible” (Gillig). This raises the suspicion on if the patient truly has a disorder or are following hypnotic suggestions from their psychiatrist. I think Multiple Personality Disorder truly exists, however I do not think that a person is not born with it. In my opinion, it is a person’s coping mechanism to deal with a traumatizing event that happened to them. Although it is not true in all cases, there is a high percentage of cases who report having traumatic childhood emotional, physical or sexual abuse. Since MPD is dissociation from the primary identity, it would make sense for the major cause of it be from events that are often too traumatic or stressful for people to deal with. This is especially true if other identities can be triggered by certain things, which could be related back to something in their childhood. Her visible entrance into the movie is of her speaking French in Dr. Wilbur’s office. This French language shows her sophistication, especially since she seems to carry herself more elegantly and lady-like. Instead of closing in on herself, she is very open and hold herself up straight. She has a very self-assured personality, unlike some of the other identities who are more afraid. This confident in herself is displayed by her more forward behavior. Another trait that makes up her personality is her leadership, due to the fact that the other identities turn to her when something happens. However, this leadership comes with fear due to the fact that the other identities are afraid of displeasing her. She appears to be one of the identities that realizes the most of the situations, and is aware of Sybil’s memories. This intelligence makes up a part of her personality, especially since it leads to her being more confident in herself and what to do.
