Right now the cost of living wage in the United States for one adult with one child would be “$16.74 an hour”(Living Wage). This minimum wage is barely enough for two people and pay for the expenses of each person. The problem with minimum wage being so low is that it does not serve as living wage nor does it adequately give an individual the amount they need to live a sustaining life. The government needs to also keep in mind that some families or single parents would need a higher minimum wage in order to obtain enough money to provide for both people in the house. The minimum wage was initially created to act as the living wage for people so that there would be no way for an individual to not make enough money. I believe the minimum wage should be the living wage so that people can make enough money to live and when the living wage cost rises then the minimum wage should also rise to balance with the living wage. The minimum wage increase allows people to have more money to spend in the community, which helps to build the economy. When people hear that the minimum wage increases they go and find jobs so that they can put more money in the pocket rather then before when they had to scrape by to live. According to CEPR, “ when the minimum wage was increased in the beginning of 2014 the unemployment rate decreased by 2.75%”(CEPR). These statistics accurately show that with a higher minimum wage people can not only live better but, the economy will increase and the work force will increase. In conclusion, the United States should be more aware of the living wage needed by people n the 21st century because as the cost of living raises the government should also increase the minimum wage. Without the minimum wage the United States would be in complete poverty and the unemployment rates would be at an all time high.
