Minimum wage is the lowest wage permitted by law or by special agreement. Minimum wage is different in every state, and the debate is whether or not minors should be paid minimum wage. One side states that minors should not be paid minimum wage, meaning that people who are under the age of 18 should not be paid the minimum wage their state allows. Then the other side says minors should be paid minimum wage. Each side makes valid points, and both have cons to it as well. For example in Illinois minimum wage is $8.25, but varies on your job. In Missouri the minimum wage is $7.65, and also varies on the job you have. The question is, should minors be paid minimum wage?

The point that says adults have more to pay for, is true in a sense. Most adults have children that they care for, and raising a child is quite expensive. On top of that adults have bills to pay, and they still have to be able to afford groceries for the month. Another point is that there is a sense of superiority between adults and children, adults feel as if they are more superior to young people due to their age. Most people over 18 feel that the older you are, the more you should be paid. The article “Should Minimum Wage Depend on your Age?” Says, “ Raising the minimum wage is most likely to hurt teens and minorities who rely on low- paid, entry-level jobs to get a foothold in the working world.” This is a great statement to support the side that says minors should be paid minimum wage. They lose the experience and reading they would have gained by working.
