Why Do We Use Social Media?

Media logging exercises help people see what type of media they use the most. They may question, “Am I watching too much television”? Yet, how would they know when it becomes too much television. High School and College students all have dived deep into the world of social media. Social Media usage can cut into a Netflix binge and television marathon watching times, but it isn’t a good jump to be made. However, outside activities such as sports or even going out for coffee with friends cutting into television time is a good thing, unlike switching one media for the other. Media can include television, social sites, internet, radio, magazines, and newspapers. What we read, see, and interact with can change how we interact with the rest of society. …show more content…
We use social media to interact with those who are important to us, to keep up with people we may not see very often, and to check out what our friends are doing even if we see them every day. An article from The IU Health Blog mentions a study conducted by the University of Michigan that, “too much time on social media may make you more anxious, as you compare your life unfavorably to the lives of people on sites like Facebook. In addition, time spent typing on a smartphone or other device can contribute to wrist injuries and carpal tunnel syndrome.” So not only are we mentally affecting our health and well-being, but we are also affecting our physical abilities. As a college student, my world is almost completely digital. I buy most of my books on a nook, a tablet for reading purposes, excess my grades and class notes through ecampus, use online homework sites, and take classes completely online, such as this one. Over a three day period, I consumed 1215 minutes, a total of 20.25 hours of media. After all, consuming media is one thing, but what about understanding it. While listening to Pandora, it prompted me to go onto YouTube and watch a music video for a song. While watching the video, I noticed that they had a long pause on a Holiday Inn hotel sign. Holiday Inn was never mentioned in the song, nor was a hotel even necessary to show in the music video. I saw this as a promotion for the hotel. The music video was about a couple running away together to remember why they were in love, and apparently they stayed at a Holiday Inn. It seems out there, but this could make consumers more likely to stay at a Holiday Inn. It’s easier to think of it as a trend. If everyone you know wears Nike tennis shoes to the gym, when you go to buy new shoes, Nike’s styles and symbol are probably going to stick out to you and you will have more of a chance of buying their

My media diary test shows me that my media time spending is very diverse. I classified my media usage into three categories, news & social networking, entertainment, and study. For all three type of usages, I calculated the time-use for each type and found out that I am in favor of social media most. During the testing time, I spent 115 minutes media time in day one and 160 minutes in day two. My average time spending for social media is about 135 minutes/day.…

For the past weeks I have been monitoring and recording three different days of my own media consumption. Media to me personally is computer use, cell phone use for entertainment other than phone calls and reading the paper. Basically, being involved or cut off from what is happening around me at the time. I started my journey by doing my no media day first. I did not use the internet on this day nor did I check the school website in 24 hours.…

Documenting media intake is a big eye opener because it can be hard to comprehend how much time is being spent with media. For me, the process of documenting every time I was exposed to media made me want to avoid it altogether. I would think about how I had not checked Facebook in a while and then decide that I should not check it because I did not want to do the tedious work of documenting the time I had spent on social media. However, having to document my media diet did not frequently stop me from texting or checking social media. Analyzing my media diet was not a shocking experience, but it did lead me to think about the lack of variety in my media exposure.…

Sherry Turkle and Jane McGonigal once stated that we as humans thrive on nothing more than the physical aspect behind social media and video games. We as humans want to be a part of something bigger and better and we want to leave a mark on this world. We are the generation that is attached and connected to our technology and without out technology, we would be nothing. We need the reassurance that we are liked in this community. People are constantly needing to check their phones to see whether they have a text or not or just because they thought they heard their phone go off.…

Social media has grown tremendously and it had a positive impact on society economically and maybe socially but it is also the worst thing that could ever happened to us. It can really affect our mental health. I remember when Kylie Jenner got lip fillers done a few years ago; many teenage girls were placing a cup over their mouths and sucking all the air out of it to get their lips to look like Kylie’s lips. The end results for some of these girls were not good, some were getting their lips bruised, and some got their lips cut from a broken glass…

The interactions with others, behaviour, and personal health, all have been affected because of the distractedness of social media. In the journal article Distracted by Raymond Gozzi, he mentions why teens use electronic devices: “They use electronic contracts to avoid face-to-face interactions. It is easier to text someone a short message, and get texts back, than to actually talk to them” (Gozzi 111). Through the use of social media, people can pick and choose what they want to involve themselves in, whether it be conversations, events, etc. By avoiding face-to-face interactions, they begin to lack the social skills necessary in life.…

In a media pervaded society, it is important for audiences to be critical recipients rather than passive receivers of media information. What role does media have on the society? There are popular metaphors that are used to discuss the role of media in society. A popular metaphor used in discussion is called the “Window”, what is meant by this is that the media gives us a wider view of the world which enables us to see more of the world than our experiences allow. Metaphors contain a wealth of information hidden in one seemingly simple concept.…

Technology and media is not new to our world. As we were assigned to document our media experience for seven days, I realized how media plays an important role to my daily life. During day 1 the first thing I did when I woke up was to grab my phone and check my social media. I would probably spend about less than 30 minutes catching up on updates I missed while I was asleep. After, I decided to eat breakfast.…
