How many times have you witnessed or heard stories about a Welfare recipients selling their food stamps for cash? If you have not, I am sure you have heard stories. We automatically assume it is to buy drugs, alcohol, cigarettes or, even a lottery ticket. What about the Facebook post showing welfare recipients buying an iPhone, iPad or gaming system? The sharing and comments that are attached to those posts showing the anger society has against these behaviors. The problem is we assume all Welfare recipients are like this and all recipients are lazy, drug addicts and are out to cheat the system. Ranee, “Should Drug Tests Be Required of Welfare Recipients?” Her article is based on her opinion and experience with her mother who abused the welfare program. (Haerens, Margaret) The problem is the articles are not based on any facts but one person, her mother. Stories like this feed and help create the stereotype. Does every Mexican steal, rape and sell drugs? No. Since allowing people into our country is a form of aid, should we than say we can search, drug test and arrest you whenever we feel there is suspicious behave, again no. So why should we allow them to drug test Welfare recipients? Just because we feel most of them have suspicious behavior. We have become a judgemental, greed, violent and inequality society that looks for anyone way to embarrass and look down upon people. The perception of her through this article is she is out to punish everyone for what her mother did, and this is exactly what we are trying to do. We have lost our compassion for people and look for justice where no justice is needed. We act like we are being victimised for the behaviors of a few since we pay taxes and feel we have an entitlement to judge them. The stress we dealing with on a daily basis is what has helped us lose our compassion for others
