Housing or dorms have gotten more expensive over the years simply because they are becoming more attractive. Mount Mercy University located in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, does not have air-conditioned dorms, but those dorms were also built twenty to thirty years ago. Comparing Mount Mercy’s dorms to the University of Iowa’s newly built dorms, one can see that Iowa’s dorms are more attractive. Iowa’s dorms are air-conditioned and have a more modern look to them compared to Mount Mercy’s old and used dorms. College students pay for only a small portion of education and pay for a large amount of housing. Tuition and fees for the University of Iowa are $9,189, but housing costs $10,450 (Average...Budgets). Although one may save money while living off-campus, he or she is missing out on the whole college experience. Meeting new people and making memories is what college is all about and by living off-campus one may feel left out. Receiving a higher education is something that everyone should have the opportunity to receive, and it is sad knowing that some do not want to continue schooling after high school because of how much college is costing today.
