The biggest landfill has 1,500 trucks delivering 12,000 tons of garbage a day. This landfill is in the suburbs of Los Angeles. The amount of waste that this landfill is currently holding is around 3.7 million tons. That amount of trash covers 700 acres and towers almost 500 feet tall ("Puente Hills..."). Smaller landfills are also becoming overused. Smaller towns do not have as much of land to work with like Los Angeles, so trash collectors are having to drive this trash to the next open landfill. On average, it costs thirty dollars per ton to recycle trash, fifty dollars to send it to the landfill, and sixty-five dollars to seventy-five dollars to incinerate it ("Main Navigation"). If people were to be getting rid of clothing, they should not just throw them away; there is people in need of clothes, so other people should donate if they are getting rid of clothes. To reduce landfills, people should stop buying fruits and vegetables with a plastic covering. This is extra plastic that is just going to be thrown away. When somebody finishes a beverage out of a plastic bottle, their thought is to throw it away. If people were to save those bottles, or wash these bottles, they could use their bottle for another beverage. The last idea to reduce the amount of landfills is by having people creating compost.
