The Pros And Cons Of Keeping Marine Animals

"The best way to observe a fish is to become a fish" stated by Jacques Yves Cousteau, Oceanographer. No one really understands what animals in the ocean and animals in captivity feel, therefore these two opposing viewpoints try to find which is better for the animal. One opposing viewpoint is keeping marine mammals captive in theme parks promotes conservation. The other viewpoint believes keeping marine mammals captive in theme parks is cruel. Both viewpoints are strong, but keeping marine mammals captive in theme parks is cruel is the strongest viewpoint.
One reason why the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society has a better argument is because they are a more credible author. George Mannina is an attorney who fought the case that believes keeping marine animals in captivity promotes conservation. Mannina has fought many cases about the environment. Mannina has the weaker argument because he doesn't focus

Mannina states mostly facts with topics such as: The Role of Public Display Facilities, The Value of Education, Teaching the Importance of Conservation, and The Need for Research. These topics do not make the reader feel compelled to go out and help these animals like the WDCS does. One emotional appeal that the WDCS uses is when the parks say ¨whales and dolphins in captivity have forgotten how to live in the wild¨ (page 204) and the WDCS comes back and says ¨Whales and dolphins are intelligent creatures, if they can learn tricks that aren't necessary for survival then they can learn how to be wild again.¨ (page 204) Another emotional appeal is when the park says ¨our animals are happy¨ (page 203) and the WDCS comes back with ¨dolphins have a natural smile on their face, they also die smiling.¨ (page 203) These emotional appeals make the reader feel sorry for the animal and maybe make the reader feel wrong if they have participated in watching captive marine

It is well known that exotic pets, such as birds, should be fed in a way that enables them to forage. So, why would it be any different for killer whales? It is just as important for the mental health of a killer whale to be able hunt, as it is for a bird to be able to forage. Additionally, the diets in captivity are lacking in nutrition. Several whales in captivity have a drooping dorsal fin, a sign of poor health that is rarely seen in wild whales10.…

6 Some people may not see why we use these animals in the first place. 7 However, I see this situation in a different way. 8 I believe that animals should be used in dangerous jobs because they have special abilities, they are trained well, and they can’t be forced to do something they don’t want to do. 9 First off, dolphins and sea lions have special abilities. 10 In the article, Dolphins, sea lions train for Navy deployment to overseas troublespots, an interview with the program that trains the marine animals that was written by Tony Perry, Perry states ,“ Dolphins and sea lions can dive to the depths of several hundred feet and, unlike humans, do not suffer from the potentially fatal…

A clear example of this is seen in the collapsed dorsal fin of captive male orcas. A collapsed dorsal fin is a sign that something is wrong with the killer whale because in nature this does not occur. Many believe that killer whales in captivity receive exceptional veterinary care that helps them live a prolonged and healthy life. These animals are given daily a reliable food source and are not faced with the predators that they could potentially encounter in the open ocean. Though this is a valid point, orcas pose various adaptations which has helped them survive for so long in the marine environment.…

While they are in captivity, they have very little space and cannot behave naturally (Captivity); living in a small tank is very different from living in the sea. This change in environment could affect the whales to having odd behavior. Since they are trained creatures that live in smaller tanks, this could cause them to misbehave and disobey the trainer’s orders. “Captive whales and dolphins have been trained to perform tricks, day after day, for food as a reward instead of behaving naturally.” After all, whales are intelligent creatures and trainers would train them to follow orders so they would use the whales as entertainment in aquariums. Placing these creatures in such small tanks can result in stress and aggression, so this could be a possible reason why the killer whale might have possibly killed the trainer.…

Forcing dolphins to suffer in these parks for the enjoyment of others is morally wrong because of the suffering it causes. Tom Regan, a well-known philosopher, wrote an article called, “The Case for Animal Rights”. In this he explains that animals are an experiencing subject of life and thus have inherent moral value. Regan also goes on to mention that any such creature has a right to be treated with respect, (Regan). In this case, dolphins are not being treated with respect and are not shown they have values.…

    1. I do not think that any animal deserves to be held in captivity and paraded around for human pleasure. Also, I do not think that commercial fisherman should be able to use unsafe fishing practices that harm other sea creatures in the process. There are better and more humane ways to catch fish than dragging nets across the ocean where many different species are caught, injured, and killed. Unfortunately, the fishing industry like many others is consumer driven and in order to supply a cheap product, the fisherman must use the most efficient methods to catch fish which do not benefit other species of fish in the ocean.…
