The Pros And Cons Of Induced Abortion

A woman has the right to choose what happens to her body and when in all aspects of her life. Pro-life activists are attempting to make all abortion illegal arguing that abortion is murder and goes against God’s decision. However, the right to choose is simply to choose whether or not to have to have complete control of one’s body.

Limiting an individual’s access to abortion may decrease the amount of abortions administered, however it increases the amount of unsafe, albeit illegal, abortions performed (Morrison). The Guttmacher institute shows that in Africa the rate of abortion per 1000 women of childbearing age (15 to 44) is 29, and in Latin America is 32 per 1000 women, while in both regions abortion is illegal under the majority of circumstances (Facts...Induced Abortion). In Western Europe the rate is 12 per 1000 women where it is generally permitted. The World Health Organization estimates 68,000 deaths a year due to unsafe abortions (Ahman & Shah). Prior to the Roe v Wade an estimated amount of 5,000 American women died annually as a result of illegal abortions (Our Bodies Ourselves). In South Africa, the annual number of abortion-related deaths fell by 91 percent after the liberation of abortion (Facts… Induced Abortion).

This claim, however, is redundant due to the separation of church and state in America. It is wrong to force one’s religious beliefs against another, especially one who does not hold the same. Others argue that abortion causes a shortage of adoptable babies (Koch). Despite the claims of reduced adoption attempts, there are about 135,000 adoptions in the US a year, with 59 percent from the child welfare system, 26 percent from other countries, and 15 percent from voluntarily relinquished American babies

Any woman that has ever had a late-term abortion knowingly and willingly committed fetal homicide. According to Dr. Jen Gunter, an OB/GYN and a pain medicine physician, "1,186 late-term abortions were conducted in 2012" (Gunter). That equals 1,186 lives that were ripped from this world... futures stripped from human beings. Although a fetus may not be a life since it relies on a host to survive, late-term abortion should be made illegal because the fetus can feel the pain of the D&X procedure, the D&X procedure is harmful to the mother, and women are using abortion as a form of birth control rather than a form of termination in a time of crisis.…

“Although a majority of countries in Africa and Latin America have laws prohibiting abortion in most circumstances,” Singer states, “ official bans do not prevent high abortion rates.” It is simple to understand Singer’s reasoning- whether or not it is legal, the people that want the abortion will get it someway somehow. Going by the statistics he has gathered, Singer explains that, even though abortions may be illegal, official bans will not stop the amount of abortions that will still occur.…

“No woman can call herself free until she can choose consciously whether she will or will not be a mother,” This quote, spoken many years ago by Margaret Sanger, a prominent pioneer in the history of contraceptives, still has immense relevance in today’s society. Many women every year find themselves with unwanted pregnancies, but why does it make sense for someone not carrying the child and feeling the effects of it to decide the circumstances under which she can terminate it? The conclusion a multitude of people come to is that it should not be anyone’s decision but hers. In the United States, abortion should be available for all women with less restrictions and the final choice should be theirs, because a woman is entitled to rights over her own body, and it is a healthier, safer option for the woman that does not wish to carry to term and for the child.…

There are about 1.1 million abortions performed each year in the United States alone. This accounts for about 1/4 of all pregnancies. “Approximately 1/3 of American women have had an abortion by age 45” (Guttmatcher). As a baby lover, these statistics are really hard for me to wrap my head around. There are over a million babies dead that could be learning how to walk and talk.…

A theory about religion is that life starts at conception. People with other beliefs should not be forced to abide by this certain theory. Legal abortion today states that human life starts at birth, but when a baby is born, it grows and develops into a teenager, then a mature adult, until it finally becomes old and dies. Humans are made to develop and change, so a human becomes a human during conception.…

People argue about the foetus’ right to live, but are we putting the right of an organism that cannot survive on its own, over the woman who has to carry it? In 2015, 50% of adults in the U.S.A considered themselves ‘pro-choice’ and 46% ‘pro-life’. This is the biggest gap there has been. Abortions can be very emotionally taxing and are not cheap, costing NZD$350-500 in the first trimester or more depending the stage. Getting an abortion is not a choice a woman makes easily, but it is a choice she should be able to make.…

Before legalization, hospitals in New York City reported shocking statistics concerning illegal abortions. Hospitals reported that twenty-three percent of maternal admissions accounted for risky abortion attempts (Arthur). After legalization of abortion in the U.S. the number of hospital admissions for abortion-related complications dropped by seventy-five percent in 1973 alone (Arthur). About 78,000 women die each year from unsafe abortions (Arthur).…

Then risk getting infections, injuries, and trauma, just to get an abortion done. In South Africa when abortion was legalized abortion-related deaths dropped by 91% (Singer.) By providing safe, legal abortion, with follow-up care to prevent or treat any complications, many women would still be alive. If so many support abortion, then they should not legalize abortion because it too would take lives. In many other countries, abortion is illegal according to the World Health Organization(WHO), about 21.6 million women had an unsafe abortion, these abortions themselves were responsible for the death of nearly 47,000 women (Thompson, Tamara.”…

Worldwide, approximately 42 million abortions occur per year that’s approximately 115,000 per day. In the United States, 1.21 million abortions occurred in the year of 2005, which roughly comes out to be 3 per day (4). Moreover, 1% of all abortions occur because of rape or incest, 6% of abortions occur because of potential health problems with either the mother or the child, and 93% of all abortions occur for social reasons (4). Ending an unborn baby’s life is not constituted by choice—no, it’s constituted by deliberate murder. First and foremost, slaughtering an unborn baby via abortion is wrong because an unborn baby is still biologically considered a human being.…

The definition of an abortion is the process of ending a woman’s pregnancy by the termination of an embryo or fetus inside the mother’s womb (Pros and Cons Abortion). During the process of an abortion, the unborn child is not treated as a human being. The baby is treated as a nuisance; it is not given the proper care, it is regarded as a nonliving thing (Abortion Facts). Abortion is not the only method to take when a mother is confused by her feelings about the pregnancy for how her pregnancy came about (Arguments about Abortion). There is no reason to punish a child when they have no control of what is going on in the world around them.…

Pro-life advocates tend to think that if abortion were illegal, there would be not more abortions. They, however, are false. If abortion were to be illegal, there would still be many abortions performed; they would be unsafe procedures performed by non-physicians who may botch the procedure, by the pregnant mothers themselves or by “back-alley butchers” (“Misconceptions About Abortion”). Modern abortion procedures are safe and sanitary. Access to legalized, professionally performed abortions reduces the risk of injury or death.…
