Research suggests that when high levels of fear are induced by attacks then people begin to see these out groups as more threatening and respond more revengeful and retaliatory toward out groups including people of different race, religion, ethnicity, and immigration status. Individuals that displayed fear responses were more likely to support military intervention, violence, and political intolerance. When America does act out in fear, policies like the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 where Chinese immigration, although only making up .002 of the population, were halted due to anti- Chinese sentiment and tension that arose due to declining wages and fear of destroying “white purity”. Fear also looks like Operation Wetback that sent Mexican immigrants back to Mexico through forced and armed military, which gave rise to hundreds of civil right violations and illegal deportations. Today, because of fear of terrorism, middle eastern individuals are facing tougher immigrant screenings, interrogation, and
