Upon my arrival at Commonwealth Honors Academy a mere twelve days ago I was ignorant to the fact that I was going to learn so much in my time spent here, but now I look back and realize that I have gained so much knowledge and I have acquired more details to add to what I knew before arrival. Overall I have learned that most things in life require constant attention and effort to make them truly work and that anyone you come in contact with and create an influence with will then, in turn, make a larger circle of influence that can quickly become bigger than you can ever be. The universal themes that have had the largest impact on me are the themes of Happiness, Friendship, and Sovereignty of Education. It was Aristotle who defined happiness…

Two of the Effective Educator Goals that I have chosen to provide rationale on are, Manages & Motivates and Reflects on Practice. I feel very strongly that most students, when given a positive, encouraging, and nurturing learning environment, can motivate themselves to be socially interactive and engaged in their own education. When students see your positive energy, feel your desire to learn, and know they are an asset to your classroom; most often will put forth the effort to be an active participant. I have had differentiated environments to meet the needs of certain individuals to promote a supportive and meaningful environment that was conducive to learning.…

Without knowing my ethnicity, you'd be certain that I was a white male if you heard the way I spoke. Being raised in a mostly white neighborhood has caused me to speak in a very articulate fashion and behave in the same manner as the others around me. In pursuit of a better education, I started my first year at Michigan Math and Science Academy in the 7th grade. Unlike the other public schools I’ve attended before 7th grade, the student body at MMSA is predominately black. After being in mainly white schools for all of my life, my first year at MMSA took some adjusting to.…

Governor’s School Last summer, I attended governor's school west where three hundred and twenty-five bright and open-minded students from all across North Carolina gathered for five and a half weeks in a college campus setting. To me, this was a big milestone in life that changed me for the better. We left our cozy lives of families and friends to start with a clean slate with strangers we’ve never seen in our lives. At first, we thought of it as a sacrifice of our summer to glamorize our college application, but throughout the program we experienced things that exceeded beyond our expectations.…

Entering the double-doors to start my 11th grade year evoked different emotions than had previous first days of school. The commencement of my freshman and sophomore years were nerve wracking, of course, yet an underlying excitement to see friendly faces had maintained my spirits. However, as a junior, my classmates were now off in their AP and honors classrooms, and I, in a state of ambivalence, was embarking on a new challenge: the International Baccalaureate (IB) Programme. My integration into this community, honestly, took a prolonged amount of time.…

By using a facilitated focus group, panels of both students and faculty will be able to see not only their interdependence on each other, but also develop a greater awareness of each side’s needs to create a superior academic experience. Focus groups can also be utilized as a platform for both students and faculty to speak up about factors which may not be directly associated with their learning experience such as gender/racial diversity within their major or needing moral support to succeed. By allowing an open opportunity for students and faculty to not only speak about these issues, but also listen to the concerns of the other side, these focus groups can lay the foundation for future initiatives to address the needs of both sides such as diversity inclusion or peer mentoring, based on the…

The manatee has always sparked my curiosity because humans are their only major predator, leading to human-wildlife conflict.…
