The Pros And Cons Of Hydroelectric Power

Improved Essays
Hydroelectric Power is when a power source is used to rotate a propeller-like piece which is called a turbine. Which then turns a ingot shaft in the electric generator. This is the motor that makes the electricity that we want and need! Hydroelectric usually uses falling water to rotate the turbine. The water that leaves the turbine goes back into the stream right below the dam. There lots of pros to using hydroelectric power. One pro of hydroelectric power is that is is renewable! It's considered renewable because it uses our Earth’s water to produce electricity. The sun shines and the water heats up and begins to evaporate, which then forms clouds and then falls back onto the earth as precipitation. This implies that we can’t use it up! …show more content…
It uses natural flowing river water to turn turbines, or on a large scale with a hydroelectric dam. The dam straddles a river, blocking its progress downstream. Water collects on the upstream side of the dam, making a reservoir. The reservoir becomes battery like, storing energy that is released little by little. To let them know how much it would cost to begin drawing from the resource I would start off by telling them that it is very expensive but it'll be all worth it! Hydroelectricity is produced for an average of 0.85 cents per kilowatt-hour. “This is about 50% the cost of nuclear, 40% the cost of fossil fuel, and 25% the cost of using natural gas.” This amount of hydroelectricity will be about $3 trillion in investment and make about 60 trillion kWhs of electricity. Telling them them how my energy resource benefits our area, economy and community. I would start off by letting them know hydroelectricity is fueled by water. Which means that it's a clean source, meaning it won't cause pollution in the air like power plants that burn fossil fuels such as coal or natural gas. The energy that is generated through hydroelectricity relies on the water cycle. The water cycle is driven by the sun, making it a renewable power source. Making it more reliable than fossil

(How Geothermal Energy Works) After we find and drill holes into the earth to get the water vapor, we transfer it into electricity. We do this using a steam turbine generator. The turbine is operated by heating the water found from hot spots creating steam. The steam is guided through a pipe which is used to rotate the blades of a turbine. This is very similar to the windmill; the heat energy from the steam is then turned to mechanical energy.…

Hydro-power plants capture kinetic energy as moving water turns the turbines. Generators are then introduced to convert mechanical energy into electrical energy. Dams are built to harvest hydroelectricity but they can cause back up of water and flood land upstream or cause droughts downstream. Biomass energy is the conversion of biological materials and wastes into energy sources (Rinkesh). By burning materials such as wood, plants, and carbon based waste they are kept out of landfills.…

Hydroelectric energy is made from a turbine that turns falling water into mechanical energy; then that mechanical energy is turned into electric energy. This process helps produce electric energy from the kinetic energy of falling water. How does this process involve chemistry? It first begins with the mechanical energy of the water. Mechanical energy is all the energy that is put upon an object.…

Hydroelectric power sites use a dam to store river water in a reservoir. And the water released from that reservoir goes through a turbine, spinning it, which activates a generator to produce electricity. Hydroelectric power is a domestic source of energy, without relying on international fuel sources. Hydropower is fueled by water so it becomes a clean fuel source. These power sites are important because unlike power plants, they will not pollute the air and are better for the environment.…

This wind power got converted into mechanical power, which used to produce Electricity. “People started using wind power centuries ago with windmills, which pumped water, ground grain, and did other work” (Hunter, 2011). In other words, the wind’s turbine uses the wind to generate electricity. Advantages of Alternative Energy Sources: • The main advantage of renewable sources of energy is that they are inexhaustible. When the water turns the turbines, that are connected to a generator that has coil in them, it creates electricity. The fuel used for pumped storage is water. It is safe to harvest and transport because it's just plain old H2O. It's not harmful or explosive. The fuel is not expensive to harvest because if you have a body of water then you put the pumped storage plant by the water and that's it, the water is simply run through tubes and returned to be reused later.…

One of the disadvantages of wind energy is the initial cost. According to the Iowa Energy Center the initial cost of a residential 5 kW system is $15,000 and a commercial 50 kW system is $100,000 (5). Another disadvantage is that wind energy turbines are mostly located in remote locations. Due to the height of wind turbines some city codes may prevent them being installed in cities which forces them to more remote areas. This can also lead to energy being lost during transmission and distribution…
