They came under French rule in 1900, the assumption could be made that until their independence in 1960 they were not in a very peaceful state. They currently have a republic governmental system with a constitution that was implemented on April 8th, 1996 and was last amended in 2005. The chief of state is President Lt. Gen. Idriss DEBY Itno who has been in power since December 4th, 1990. They also have a head of government, which is Prime Minister Kalzeube Pahimi Deubet who has been in power since November 21st, 2013. According to the data on supplement #1 it is safe to conclude that Chad is in most respects not a free nation. Based on the data they appear to lack certain civil liberties and due to the fact that the press is also lacking a lot of freedom, it is likely to conclude that the President uses his power freely. Not only that, but it also likely that this can lead to corruption in the system due to a very small group of people holding most of the power. Currently, only 6% of rural areas have improved sanitation and while 31% urban is not a great number it is an improvement. The current natural resources are petroleum, uranium, natron, kaolin, fish (Lake Chad), gold, limestone, sand and gravel, and salt. The most important of them being petroleum, which is a major export of theirs. That being said it is safe to assume they are exporting whatever they can to make the country money, which could mean that they are not doing so sustainably. Although Chad is very low on the carbon emissions scale, that is most likely due to their lack of industry. It is safe to assume that if Chad were to industrialize their current environmental state would change drastically. If people become more affluent, it would solve the issue of sanitation because people will be more able to dispose of their trash in more sustainable ways. The problem is that industrialization has known effects on the environment and due to the fact that they have yet to do so, signifies that the environmental situation will likely decline. Although, if they are able to industrialize in a way that involves the technology of today it might be possible to minimize this effect.
