These days it is a wonder how anyone is still alive. Everyday humans face obstacles that attack their basic right to live. In 2013 car accidents killed 32,719 people in the United States. Luckily the number is on the decline thanks to newer, safer, technology that has been implemented in cars. Crumple zones have increased; airbag technology has come a long way. Car accidents are an unfortunate side to current lives, and it is 100% human error. Why would the population want unnecessary technology claiming the lives of an additional 8,454 people each year? The wouldn’t. In 2013 firearms claimed the lives of 8,454 people, or about 23 people per day, including Christmas. This gun death epidemic in the United States needs to be put to rest by expanding background checks, this is a legal, and a moral problem we are facing, as a nation.

Anti gun control organizations such as the NRA believe that guns are the solution when they are just the opposite. Study after study demonstrates that gun ownership leads to more crime, “For every 1 percent increase in gun ownership, a state’s firearm homicide rate jumped by 0.9 percent.” Since there is no survey at the state level that measures gun ownership, researchers estimated these numbers by the number of suicides by firearms, because there is a strong correlation between gun ownership, and suicide by guns. By enforcing tougher background checks, we could not only prevent homicides, but prevent suicides. Humans are imperfect, and there will always be accidents, but if it is harder to get guns, less people will die.
