Aiming for zero gun deaths seems like an unmanageable feat, but if new legislation saves just one life is it not worth it? Anti gun control organizations such as the NRA believe that guns are the solution when they are just the opposite. Study after study demonstrates that gun ownership leads to more crime, “For every 1 percent increase in gun ownership, a state’s firearm homicide rate jumped by 0.9 percent.” Since there is no survey at the state level that measures gun ownership, researchers estimated these numbers by the number of suicides by firearms, because there is a strong correlation between gun ownership, and suicide by guns. By enforcing tougher background checks, we could not only prevent homicides, but prevent suicides. Humans are imperfect, and there will always be accidents, but if it is harder to get guns, less people will die.
