With more gun control laws there would be lower potential violence involving firearms. When a gun is very accessible the urge to use the firearm for the wrong purpose is increased. According to FBI, “…in 2013 arguments (such as romantic triangles, brawls fueled by alcohol or drugs, and arguments over money) resulted in 1,962 gun deaths (59.9% of the total).” Someone who is not thinking straight with a gun on hand could easily make a wrong decision and shoot someone with the firearm. The 2nd Amendment does apply to our present day, but not in the same way it did when it was written. According to HuffPost, “The Second Amendment was created so that the states could form militias or armies to destroy insurrections or slave rebellions because the federal government had no standing military for a long time.” Not to say that Americans should not have guns, though instead, the laws on firearms should be stricter. “…researchers found that homicide rates are higher in states where more households have guns” (Bjorklund). Which is more reason why gun control should be increased. Also, in agreement with the statement by Anne Cunningham, “Why would anyone wish to sacrifice a less deadly society for an abstract (and possibly moribund) principle based on a centuries-old document?” Most would agree that the guns are there to protect. However, to allow regular American citizens to have extremely harmful guns is risky.
