However, this is not true at all. People who keep guns in their homes for self-defense are actually putting their children’s lives at risk. Some parents have trouble overcoming their anger and stress, therefore taking their problems out on others. With a weak mental stability and easy access to a highly dangerous weapon, serious harm can be done to people around that person. “Katie Ray-Jones, president of the National Domestic Violence Hotline says, ‘... These women tell us their intimate partners have beaten them with their guns, shot them, and threatened to kill their children and themselves if they try to leave,’” ("Gabby Giffords, et. al.) Also, what if a child were to get a hold of the gun? There is a high chance that they could accidentally end up shooting somebody or even themselves. There have been many cases where this has happened, a child obtaining a gun and unintentionally shooting their sibling. This is why, just like many other rights, the right to self-defense needs to be limited to prevent serious harm towards others. The Constitution gives citizens the right to be safe, although numerous people do not take this fact into consideration. “Gun control laws help to protect law-abiding citizens from gun violence by criminals and do not disarm the general public,” (Woods). They believe that more gun control laws would not decrease crime and deaths caused by guns. This is not correct, though. Strengthening laws will help decrease the access to illegal gun sales. Many illegal gun sales are made throughout the U.S. because people have found loopholes around the gun control laws that currently exist. “As much as 40% of all gun sales are undocumented private party gun sales that do not require a background check (aka the ‘gun show loophole’),” ("Gun Control - ProCon.org."). Stricter background checks would provide more safety for all. “In states that have closed the private sale loophole by requiring a background check for every handgun sale, 38 percent fewer women are shot to death by intimate partners,” ("Mayors Against Illegal Guns."). On the subject of deaths, most suicides and homicides are caused by guns. “Homicide is the second leading cause of death for youths 10–19 years old,” ("Does Gun Control Reduce Crime?"). “Guns were the leading cause of death by homicide (66.6% of all homicides) and by suicide (52.2% of all suicides),” ("Gun Control - ProCon.org."). Stress and depression can, unfortunately, lead to kids resorting to harmful methods of relief. Usually, the method is by firearms. These children have such easy access to guns, it’s unacceptable.
