Gun control laws clearly go against the second amendment, which states “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed” (“Second”). The main motive of this amendment is to guarantee our basic right of self-defense. This amendment is giving citizens the right to own firearms. In other words, the government cannot implement restrictions on guns because it is taking our right away. Another amendment these laws would contradict is the ninth amendment. The ninth amendment says that citizens have “retained” rights other than the ones listed in the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. According to Joseph Sobran, self-defense would undoubtedly be included in the list of unsaid rights. If we have the right to life and liberty, we must be able to protect it. Also, the Constitution does not give the federal government any power to have control over guns. The Bills of Rights was created to limit the federal power as well so gun control laws are, once again, going against …show more content…
One major reason is because most citizens use firearms to defend themselves and others. An example of this is the Mississippi school shooting in 1998, where an assistant principal was able to retrieve his gun from his car and hold the shooter down until the police arrived (Richman). Also, the Federal Government's National Crime Victimization Survey concluded that there were one hundred and eight thousand uses of firearms a year for defense (Richman). Additionally, the concealed-carry permit is at an all time high and it is keeping criminals away. In the 1980’s, criminologists Peter Rossi and James D. Wright took a survey of about two thousand criminals and it was proven that more criminals were afraid that the owner (of the house they were planning to break into) was armed and would hurt them than being arrested (Golberg). Furthermore, concealed-carry guns are keeping the streets safer since it is less likely for criminals to randomly attack someone in fear that they are actually armed or someone else near by is. Moreover, concealed-carry guns are being used by more vulnerable groups of society to keep themselves safer. Some examples are African American women in Texas having the highest increase in the number of concealed-gun permits since 2000, and Pink Pistol Clubs springing up all over America to help gays and lesbians learn how to defensively use firearms
