Gun control is a highly debated and controversial topic in the United States. Proponents are urging for the U.S. to ban assault rifles, extended clips, and to make laws for extensive background checks on gun buyers. While opponents of gun control argue that the second amendment gives them the right to have firearms and extensive background checks would only prevent law abiding citizens from obtaining a firearm. The Gun Control Act of 1968 prohibited the sale of guns to several types of individuals consisting of minors, people with criminal records, disabled, illegal aliens, dishonorably discharged military personnel and others. In 1993 the Act was changed by the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act. This Act said that background checks for all unlicensed carriers had to be done before they could purchase any firearms from a licensed dealer. However, there has been discussion that there is a “gun show loophole” in the Firearms Owners Protection Act of 1986 which allows all people, including convicted felons, the ability to purchase guns without a background check. Gun control in my opinions should be refined and made specifically for people on the the terrorist watch list and or a suspicion watch list by the government not make it harder for a responsible citizen only wanting to protect his or her family from a potential threat. There should be a punishment in place to put charges against gun manufacturing companies if any guns from their factory ends up in a criminals hands.
