The Influence Of Genders In Sports

To further research this topic, I decided to do an experiment with a few of my friends. One day after school, I gathered about ten students of each gender, a total of twenty students, and I had them play a number of sports for me. We would first begin by playing a short five minute game of soccer, while the genders were separate, and then once that match was over, I mixed the two genders together on the same team, and made them play another five minute match. I continued to do this with two other sports, hockey, and then volleyball. I used my, as well as my sister’s camera to film the whole experiment to further analyze their play styles.
When I got home to watch the videos I took, I looked at a number of things that was different in their

- I looked at how intense and aggressive they were when they played, and how involved they were during the matches.
- I looked at how many times they would pass or shoot a ball, to see if maybe it affects their confidence while with the ball.
- I looked at how close they would play to one another; if they were aggressive no matter who their opponent was, or if they kept their distance and were more

While some of them said that playing with the opposite gender doesn’t matter to them, others said they prefer playing with only their respected gender because they feel more comfortable, and others said they prefer mixed genders because it was more of a challenge.
In conclusion, there are many different outcomes of mixing genders, and some factors that affect the outcomes could be how athletic the person is, and also the age of the person. I feel that mixing genders in sports at a young age is a very good thing because it allows the children to learn to appreciate and be more comfortable with the opposite genders. This eliminated gender stereotypes, and also allows for a more variety of friendships.
As the children become older, a lot of tings may differ from their play style. For women, depending on how comfortable she is, she can learn to take advantage of the situation by making it more of a challenge for her, and improve on her skills, or it can be intimidating and she will be more reserved when playing with a man. For a man, it can prove to not be as fun for them because they are being more careful towards the women, or they can treat them like just another player. An interesting thing that can happen is a man can improve his skill by trying harder so he can impress the woman with more masculinity, or on the opposite side, a woman can make it seem as if she isn’t as good as she actually is to seem more feminine. Long ago, when girls stayed home and helped their mothers at home, and boys would follow their dads to work, a stigma was made that greatly separated the two genders. As time passed, a thick line was drawn in between the genders and everyday objects, toys and activities would be placed on one side of the line. Sports were placed on the male’s side. So when more time passed, some objects were placed on different sides due to “rebellious children”, according to older generations, so more girls started playing sports.…

Others can play with boys because they like the more aggressive sports such as football. Then there are always going to be those people who say its sexiest that the boys and girls can't play together. Without being on a co-ed team of course.…

Should women be allowed to play on male sports teams? I think that women shouldn't be allowed to because of safety requirements, and sexaul harassment which would both be a big issue. First of all, male sports are aggressive and safety would be hard to avoid. They would have a high risk of injury, concussion rates in the last year have rose over 20%.There are many different kinds of injuries you can suffer while playing a male sport like you can overheat and pass out, you can tear your ACL or MCL or you could even overuse your body and strain it. Injuries are very hard to avoid and a male's body is built to take a lot more than a girls so our injury rates would increase if the females joined our team because the males are 30% stronger than females which means we have more muscle to protect us from injury.…

Although some people are not for coed sports, I am. Girls are just as capable of doing boys sports. My opinion is that the best teams should have the best players whether they are a girl or boys. All the way from pewee leagues to professional sports women are stereotyped by society. These stereotypes occur in many different ways, across a wide variety of sports. Between being valued on physical appearance of the body, and less on performance, gender stereotypes clearly exist in sports. In the article “Stereotype threat affects the learning of sport motor skills”, by Caroline Heidrich and Suzete Chiviacowsky, the authors explain that the purpose of their study was to discover if women in sports are effected in anyway by sterotypes. They gathered a group of 24 women and divided them into two groups.…

    Reverse Sexism In America

I do not think that one gender happens to be more skilled or athletic than the other but that the determining factor rests on how much time and effort transpires. I think that if schools base their judgement on not letting people of the opposite gender play sports based on the notion that they are automatically better they should not be allowed to make those decisions. They should base their standing on the fact that it happens to be labeled boys and girls sports for a reason because of the different skills needed from the certain genders. A large amount of excellent gymnasts are females because of the extreme flexibility and technique needed to thrive. Some might say that certain people are equipped to play with the opposite sex and this might be true but I feel pretty strongly that teams should not be intramural in competitive play because of the fact that sometimes groups of people need their own activities without them being infringed upon.…

Girls are expected to be submissive, less aggressive, popular, beautiful, and take on traditional nurturing roles; while boys are expected to be active, dominate, aggressive, and more independent. My school, friends, and community also emphasized appropriate gendered behavior. As mentioned in a previous assignment, I learned from my friends that having stuffed animals was not considered masculine, and when we were having recess at school, I learned the socially acceptable ways for boys to behave. The youth sports I participated in also taught me acceptable gender behavior. They were structured in the same way as the soccer league described by Michael Messner.…

When I recall certain things I notice that there were times that I was able to play things and improve over time only because of my sex rather than of my skill. Being a guy I have the opportunity to play sports if I wanted to and choose from a variety of sports. There was no problem for me when it came to sports if I did not want to play basketball, I had soccer, tetherball, football, etc. Opportunities for me to get involved were left and right all I had to do as choose what activity I wanted to be a part of. Having that availability gave me a broad spectrum from a variety of sport each with a different set of skill required.…

Without even noticing it human’s make pre determined decisions based off of their gender. We do this so many times throughout the day that most of the time we don’t even notice it anymore. In today’s society men and women act, talk, think, eat and even walk differently based off of their gender. These “roles” have put many people in a tough position leaving them with the question: is it socially acceptable to do this based off my gender? If everyone is equal and has the same rights then why do gender roles even exist?…
