Flag desecration has been a controversial topic for a number of years, including more recently. After Donald Trump was elected President of the United States, many college students, from Hampshire College to American University, began to burn the American flag as a form of protest towards the newly elected president. Because of the amount of people in such a small area burning flags, unsafe situations were posed for many peoples’ lives. Burning the flag is an ineffective way of protest, and puts peoples’ lives in danger. Students began to yell phrases such as "suck my d*ck America," and "f*ck your flag." His argument is not relevant, as he says that only black people burn the flag, and thinks that it is only an issue when black people burn the flag. When, in reality, those who are against flag burning, see it as a disrespectful act, no matter what the race. "You’re offended that (Black) people are burning the American flag? Well, I’m offended that A PIECE OF CLOTH is more important to you," (Why I’m Okay With The American Flag Burning). Once again, the author is coming off as immature, and its hard to take him seriously. He brings up topics irrelevant to the subject he was intended to discuss. For instance, "I think in our constitution, they should have included in the fine print: 'Equality for everyone: Except Black people and other ethnic minorities',"(Why I’m Okay With The American Flag Burning). This shows that he is trying to include the issue of race inequality in his argument of flag burning. Although that issue could be used to help aid his argument, he does not do so effectively. This is another example of how flag burning as a protest is ineffective, as it just brings up more irrelevant issues. He does not give any reason as to why it’s not disrespectful, or what it could lead to. Throughout the article, he is not staying on his original thesis and is going off on irrelevant tangents.
