There is no argument that American citizens should be able to feel safe within their own country, however, as a nation, we cannot become blindsided to what the United States is supposed to represent because of the actions of a few radical extremists. It seems as if Americans are far too insensitively concerned with safety to realize the freedom we are denying to people who truly need it the most. As Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “Denial of freedom is the denial of life itself. The essence of man is found in freedom” (436). It is true that any benefits to America from refugee relocation are elusive and indirect, however, threats posed by the refugees are minimal to say the least. We must do what we can to provide for their primary needs. What separates us from animals as well as from terror is to be courageous enough to mourn and have empathy for people we have never met. Peace is not so much a political directive as it is a unified state of consciousness that remains prominent and intact only to those who volunteer their existence as examples. A fearful country would respond the exact way that a majority are currently responding to the situation; - in a mere reactive and negative nature. These refugees are individuals who have experienced and witnessed terrifying events: horrific violence, corruption, the deaths
