The Pros And Cons Of Facebook And Social Media

As I sit at my desk looking over my classwork for the week I can’t help but find myself clicking back and forth between Facebook and the work I’m looking over. Before I know it, it’s past midnight and I’ve found myself only half way through the work I intended on completing for the day. I’m sure I’m not alone on this, I’ll notice classmates scrolling through their feed during a lecture, or checking their instagram account periodically as they do work in the library. Facebook and social media in general consumes hours upon hours of time throughout our daily life, sometimes outright interfering with how we carry it out. In this paper we will take a look at Facebook, and social media applications in general to see why they could be considered …show more content…
From old friends, long distance relatives, to simply asking your neighbor if they could hold onto your mail while you’re out of town; social media is the adhesive that keeps some of us interacting with those we’re normally unable to. However, this adhesive is just that, it simply cannot replace face to face interactions in our lives. Interacting with one another has turned into sending a message that’s less than 180 characters, and a reduction of one another 's physical presence. According to Greene’s article, Emile Durkheim had conducted a study into the reasons of suicide, and one of those is separation from one’s family. It follows this by using the separation of the NFL Terrell Owens from his family after he had been traded as an (extreme) example of the inability to interact with those close to us physically. The article then takes a look at women with the mean age of 38, had some college education, or had learned a trade with 92% of them using facebook as their primary social networking platform. In addition, the article also looks at how these women spend their time, and a majority are left with less than 40 minutes to socialize after performing their daily routine. Communicating with one another allows us to empathize easier, it allows us to relate to each other, and the article states …show more content…
We scroll down these pages and agree to terms we’re not quite so sure of and move on with our lives. Infact, there is an episode of Parks and Recreation where one of the characters state something along the lines of “You shouldn’t have to have an advanced law degree to avoid getting screwed over by a big corporation.” referring to the corporation their fighting against over tracking the entire towns online activities that had been placed into their terms of service without their knowledge. This is easily related to the terms of service we agree to with facebook, where its used to target ads to their target demographics. On January first of this year their new terms of service added a policy quite similar to the one satirized on the show where it will allow the website to (literally) track our every location, which most will agree is quite an invasive practice. Additionally, another issue is that if we do not agree to this policy we’re no longer able to use this platform which in a sense will separate us from the mass with an estimated 1 billion users around the globe, and over a quarter of that frequenting the site daily.
Social networking does its job well, however, the negative aspects of them can be viewed just as easily as its positives. With some moderation, and taking time out of our days

Social Activism A historian named Robert Darnton once said, “The marvels of communication technology in the present have produced a false consciousness about the past—even a sense that communication has no history, or had nothing of importance to consider before the days of television and the Internet” (Gladwell). This quote does an excellent job of showing what social networking sites have ultimately caused in today’s world. In today’s day and age people are using the internet all the time for countless reasons. Using the internet as a source of advertisement attempting to reach the maximum amount of people in the most convenient and cost efficient way possible.…

Social media provides multiple opportunities to discover new friendships both online and offline, we as users tend to always go for the easy online friendships Stephen suggests that the internet is just merely that, it is not making us lonely we ourselves are based on how we decide to use the internet. The author says, “ Loneliness is certainly not something Facebook or twitter or any of the lesser forms of social media is doing to us. We are doing it to ourselves.” (608) This provokes the thought that maybe social media users go about Facebook and other platforms wrong, and could benefit from changing how they are using the internet.…

I agree with the author because most of my friends spend their time taking photos, editing them on Instagram and posting photos on Snapchat, so when we go out they spend their time on their phones rather than us having a real conversation. I stopped communicating with real people not because I choose too but because I was forced to I did not go out one time with one of my friends that listen to what I was saying rather than being more concern about what was going on with their phones. We make ourselves lonely by not using social medias adequately and not knowing to difference what we need and what is the used for social media. I think that we ala need to have our own alone time to use social media than when we are accompanied by friends, family and children that we unwillingly take for granted sometimes and without realizing it we neglect by over using social media.…

In the article, The Effect of Technology on Relationships by Alex Lickerman, it explains how social media has taken the place of personal interactions and substituted in electronic relationships. In the article, he rationalizes how maybe the people who are replacing real relationships with online ones maybe don’t feel comfortable being face-to-face, so they go online to live their lives in a way to where they don’t have to. Lickerman calls this “social isolation”. He also explains how the cost of this type of social interaction is making people more comfortable with saying things on the internet that they usually wouldn’t say in person, that being either confrontation or how they choose to make people online see them. He explains how you can’t actually get to know everything about a person by just communicating over the internet.…
