Susie propped herself up against the headboard, and pulling her legs up to her chest, stared despondently into her lap.
She looked across at Mike. He had no idea, she thought, giving him a withering look.
Whether it was instinct, or because he 'd caught sight of her grimace, he pulled the duvet up over his head. It was all he could think of to do – hoping the earth would swallow him up because he knew what was coming.
“It’s no good hiding Mike. I can’t take anymore – you’ve got to get it sorted.”
He cringed, feigning ignorance, which he later regretted.

There was an uneasy truce at the breakfast table. He caught her eyes and held her with a stare, but she got in first.
“Well, what’re you going to do about it? And please don’t say, *‘about what’!*” Typical, he thought. She was brooding for a fight. It always came down to him to get sorted.
“It’s a common occurrence," he replied attempting to placate her. "Lots of people talk in their sleep.”

She folded her arms on the table top and buried her head and

She looked up. Her eyes were swollen, red from crying. The blood had drained away from her sharply defined features leaving a pallid, gaunt complexion. Her immaculate look had slipped. Her lack of colour accentuated by the absence of lipstick.
"What were you thinking? Didn 't you think I 'd want to know?"he exclaimed, taking a deep breath. "I don 't think you’re in a position to can go ‘round making demands when you 're carrying such a devastating secret yourself, *do you?”*
He looked over to her and considered the boot on the other foot. "Okay then,” he added, “Simple question, why?"
“What, why can’t I have children? Do you really want me to seriously answer that?”
“You know full-well what I’m asking. Didn’t you think I deserved to know?" He looked into her eyes, "Oh, I see where this is going you did this out of spite, how could you?"

She was thrown by his comment. It took her a moment to regain her composure. Colour came back to her cheeks, and then some. She stared down at the table avoiding his eyes. "Not spite – trouble with Ovaries – can 't

It wasn't that she didn't have her suspicions - in fact, from the moment he'd insisted she eat, she'd been picturing half a dozen ways this could backfire on her and only one of them had anything to do with her weak system - but it smelled so good and she wanted it so much that she didn't even bother responding to his threat in how she would be made to clean up except to grip the spoon tightly and shudder.
