Decent Essays
Summary:
Ethanol is an alcohol fuel source that is made of the sugars in plants, and it is in alcoholic drinks. Most of ethanol is made of biomass, which is usually corn or sugarcane. Most farmers these days make biomass; sends it to processors that make ethanol, and the processors would sell it, mainly as motor fuel. The main reason why ethanol is common is because it is very easy to make.

Ethanol: An alternative fuel:

The most common mix of ethanol is E10 which is 10% ethanol and 90% gasoline, partly because most engines today are not designed to withstand high levels of ethanol. There needs to be a little bit gasoline in the blend in order for the engine to start on cold days, and to stop the fuel tank and engine from rusting. E10

This is supported by the fact that on average the mass of the ethanol after burning was 2.245 kg less than before burning. addition, it has less ignition complications since the heat of vaporization of butanol is less than half of that of ethanol, hence an engine running on butanol is easier to start in cold weather than the one running on ethanol or methanol (Li et al., 2009). Butanol is a four carbon alcohol classified in the same family with methanol (1-carbon), ethanol (2-carbon) and propanol (3-carbon). It is chiefly used as an industrial solvent in producing synthetic rubber, paint, detergents, lacquer, rayon, and brake fluids and as solvents for fat, waxes, and resins (http://www.butanol.com). Methanol is the simplest alcohol, being only a methyl group linked to a hydroxyl group. It is a light, volatile, colorless, flammable liquid with a distinctive odor very similar to that of ethanol.
