Nuclear Energy: The Use Of Nonrenewable Energy

Improved Essays
The knowledge of the world is forever growing and we as a civilization or continually growing and need to provide ourselves with new cleaner sources of energy and the explorations of the natural resources just may help. But is the exploration of natural resources may not be the greatest of solutions for our current environment. Take the world today we run on coal and fossil fuels that damage the earth 's ecosystems put the plant at risk of being uninhabitable. Therefore a need arises to examine alternatives and to look towards ‘greener’ conclusions. The world’s primary energy utilization is made up primarily of nonrenewable sources of eighty plus percent. This poses problems as nonrenewable sources of energy production are not only exhaustible …show more content…
Before uranium is utilized in nuclear reactors it has to be enriched. Uranium is an extremely radioactive substance that has to be mined up and processed producing a large surplus of unusable material in the process. Nuclear reactors create excessive amounts of heat through the process of nuclear fission. Steam is produced from the process moves the generators and turbines. The excavation of uranium and plutonium causes devastation to the surrounding environment. The waste from these excavations is also radioactive (Last updated May 3, 2013 by Mathias Aarre Maehlum). Stored in subpar condition will cause the contamination of surrounding surface and groundwater for miles and miles. When hazardous radioactive materials is freed, cause monumental critical effects on vegetation, wildlife and the wellbeing of …show more content…
Further exploration may just set us back as a civilization instead of moving us forward. Someday our resources will run out and will have no one to blame but ourselves. The only geologic exploration that should be done is the exploration of preserving our planet. With limited resources we are in need of preservation more than ever. Hope we can embrace a greener planet and only use those resources that are renewable. The use of non-renewables show a disregard for planet and future generation who will one day inhabit this planet. We do not only have the decade to think of we have countless other. While I am pro solar, wind and hydro (examples of renewable energy sources) other or more harming. The exploration of our world could be what drives use back into the dark ages. Once we had used what precious resourced we have we could be facing a famine of energy. There are cheap more productive ways to produce energy with the harm of the plant or of its life forces that inhabit it. The future only will tell what direction the Geological Exploration for Natural Resources will

When a fossil fuel refinery comes down to pump some oil or dig some coal they clear out land and destroy the habitat around them. As in ' 'Fossil Fuels Pose Double Threat to Wildlife" there are two types of threats direct and indirect. The direct causes are the ones that you can visibly see like the noise pollution, the clearing out of land, destroying animal habitats, and polluting of our atmosphere. The indirect causes though are even more deadly and last even longer like soil pollution or water pollution which you can 't measure at the time and also the introduction of invasive species which since they have no natural predators can go in and destroy the natural wildlife. Nuclear is very compact so you don 't need to strip mine for the ores we use demilitarized uranium from old USSR warheads which is less damaging to the surrounding environment.…

Coal makes water toxic, is dangerous to inhale and harms ecosystems. Nonrenewable resources spilling and causing problems is nothing new. In 1986, a power plant in Chernobyl, Ukraine, had a meltdown and is still extremely radioactive to this day. An off shore oil rig leaked in to the Gulf of Mexico in 2010, the surface oil was cleaned up and local marine life has bounce back, but chunks of the oil has sunk to the bottom of the ocean and is now affecting deep sea microbial environments. Nonrenewable resources are also running out, causing many conflicts, including the current war the US is involved with in the middle east since 2001.…

One of the most dangerous parts of the power plant is the core from where the reactions occur. In the core, nuclear rods produce a vast amount of heat. Since the nuclear rods are very radioactive, they are highly dangerous to the human person. In the event that there is a nuclear meltdown, radiation is released into the atmosphere. The aftermath of a meltdown can be very destructive to the environment around it.…

Areas around the crater would be uninhabitable for years upon years. Radiation would plague the area. Animal and plant life would mutate or die. The radiation would make helping victims very hard. Another consequence would be the tension between countries that had fired nuclear weapons against each other.…

Sagoff’s idea does not take into account how harmful some resources are to the environment. Just because you can burn fossil fuels for another thousand years doesn’t mean it is morally acceptable to do so. If it is made known that fossil fuels lead to extreme pollution that causes health problems, then should society continue to endlessly burn it until it is scarce? While later in his paper Sagoff mentions multiple times that there are new developments in green technology that should continue to be developed, he still maintains the world has unlimited resources (83-86). It appears as though Sagoff is encouraging green technology simply because it is more efficient and not because it will help the environment.…

It produces a lot of waste and can result in serious health effects if it is not handled properly. Transporting nuclear fuel to and from plants is a big pollution hazard, and once the fuel is used, it is radioactive and dangerous and can cause a nuclear accident. Radioactive waste is a big part of nuclear accidents because the waste that is produced can cause serious health effect on the lives of people as well as the environment. Most of the waste transmits radiation and high temperature and can cause damage to living things. When radioactive materials are released into the environment, it forms into radioactive gases and particles.…

If people continue their current ways, the planet will heat to irreversible and possibly cataclysmic levels. But if people choose to use renewable energies and alternative fuels, instead of fossil fuels, there could still be hope. This issue cannot be disregarded; the Earth is dying, and the only way to save it is for humans to take action. Society must forget about their own selfish needs and start taking action to help the planet. If humans do not take action soon to create a greener, more efficient world, then it will be too late.…

One side effect of nuclear war that could potentially end life on Earth is nuclear winter. The debris lifted by the nuclear explosion would block the sunlight from reaching Earth. This would freeze the surface. With the added radioactive fallout, most plants and animals would die, resulting in the extinction of life on Earth ("Nuclear Winter"). Effects like these resulted in terms like Mutual Assured Destruction (MAD).…

Disposal of Nuclear waste is most important part of nuclear energy generation that can effect the hazardous materials on animals and plant life. (Ruckelshaus, 2009). Because disposal of nuclear waste is extremely dangerous, scientists suggest a lot of solutions but at the end was a failed idea such as underground burial. That underground burial lead to might spreading of radiation in future because nuclear waste will remain radioactive for hundreds of years. At 1982 United states federal law proposed idea that using the space shuttle as a garbage disposal vehicle, but shuttle flights not became enough or frequent enough and another problem is very expensive to carry to the wide space (Claiborne, 2004).…
