The Influence Of Social Security

Improved Essays
Imagine that all personal information such as social security numbers, past private conversations, and password information was able to be legally taken by the government as long as they claimed they had a good reason for it. Now, imagine that because of the government allowing themselves this power they also make your information unsecure and more easily attainable by hackers. If the United States government gets their way this scenario will be played out. In the past months of 2016, the government has made a big issue of being able to access all information on technology devices, such as smartphones and computers. The reason they are concerned about this is because most popular companies who create computer hardware and software have put …show more content…
government to be able to view the information anytime they please. This to the tech-illiterate person may not seem like a big deal, but unfortunately, this creates more problems than solutions as it develops holes in the encrypted program that would make hacking products easier. According to The Center for Technology and National Security Policy in 2009 alone the United States held 40% of all new stored information, therefore we cannot afford to have our products be any less secure. Plus, as the government is the target of hacking attempts all the time, the chance of somebody breaking in and stealing their encryption keys is way too …show more content…
This option is a proposed bill that is titled “The Compliance Act of 2016,” it simply states that if the government needs to get into any device or program that the company who created it will be forced by law to help the government achieve their goal. This is an issue because people will lose the sense of privacy when using tech products and that will hurt sales. Worst yet, people from other countries will be less likely to buy from American tech companies because their privacy could be violated. That is millions of dollars that could possibly be lost from the U.S. economy just because the government wants more security. Terrorists will still be able to use non-American made tech products to communicate outside the U.S. and the government would still be unable to do anything about it. We would only make ourselves more unsecure and insecure with our

A Pew study found that 86% of Internet and smartphone users have removed or masked their digital footprints for privacy and that Americans are more concerned with hackers violating their privacy than the government (Dredge). This study is astounding, especially considering that the government has been accused of spying on Americans. Hackers have the skillset and capabilities to invade a person’s privacy, but why would they and what would their motivation be? Black hat hackers are only motivated by financial incentives and they usually target big organizations that have valuable data. Society has every right to fear hackers, but for every…

14 citizens were killed due to the shooting, yet Apple wouldn’t decide to help the FBI. Apple is looked at as a bully, and denying the request from the FBI has started a small war about human rights. People only fear that creating a method to obtain data would fall into the wrong hands, however, with highly specialized encryption every phone user could become a potential threat. We pledge allegiance to our country for security, and honor a code to help the government protect the people. With the FBI being professional, Apple could develop a technique that could be shared to enhance personal security while balancing private security.…

FinFisher is a software "solution" that might be preventing crimes from happening, but ruining the public image of the government and software giants is causing more harm than help. One big ethical problem this brings up is that software is able to make entire countries change their policies in order to get just one piece of software to be legal. Computer scientists are able to make products that have enough power to affect the world on a global scale like no other product can do. The misconception that this situation exemplifies is "Users are…

Sounds like a great idea in theory to bridge this gap and really it is something that should be more thoroughly worked on, but instead it is being used as a lie so that companies can ship a whole bunch of electronics that would cost too much to actually fix locally in the US, than they are worth. Another issue with this whole “bridging the digital divide” nonsense is that they are sending mostly broken and unfixable products. These countries are then forced to try to sort through hundreds of broken products to find maybe one or two that actually work. Then there is the issue of people attaining hard drives that belonged to the previous owners. Some of these computer hard drives are being sold on the black market and to crime lords that can easily access information left behind and can be used to steal identities, money or even be a possible threat to the previous owners, all because they trusted that their product would actually be recycled ethically.…

The editor-in-chief of the website Julian Assange claims that the most “cost-effective” method to challenge widespread “governance by fear” is through a “worldwide movement of mass leaking (Curran, 2013).” These leaked documents are a necessity to those who are willing to pore over them to understand how government surveillance programs work. By understanding how these programs work, it becomes easier for citizens and corporations to protect themselves against needless invasions of privacy and spying. Having to scan through hundreds of leaked government documents is theoretically the first step in counteracting government surveillance; however, this cannot simply be done by every individual concerned with protecting his privacy. A simpler solution to this could be to use tools that can defend a user’s personal information and…

James Comey, the FBI director, discussed that this problem should not be solved by a company that sells phones or by an agency that protects citizens but rather by the people their trying to protect. It should be up to the American people to choose what means more to them, security or privacy (Willens, 6). On the contrary, Apple believes that creating a back door could potentially cause the FBI to use that backdoor for evil. They would be allowed into anyone’s iPhone whether they were allowed to or not. Also, they could allow spyware onto users phones at any time.…

A consumer wants to know what information a company is holding, without giving hackers a way to view that information. This culminates into creating a false sense of security to the consumer. The data that Google provides may be useful to a consumer, but it 's exponentially more dangerous in the hands of a hacker. To solve this Google needs to institute stronger safety protections when using My Activity in Google. Google should allow this service only on computers that a consumer has verified access on before.…

Some have put their own privacy at the top, while others put the safety of our nation above individual privacy. Are a couple iPhones an adequate price to pay for the safety of all Americans against terrorist organizations? This device would not breach the privacy of all Americans. The iPhone’s lack of data retrievability would also be a selling point to terrorists who would like to be as incognito to the government as possible.
