Emotional and behavioral disorders are the inability to build or maintain satisfactory interpersonal relationships with teachers and peers. Also, it includes inappropriate types of behavior or feelings under normal circumstances. A few strategies I would use in dealing with emotional and behavioral disorders would be to set up goals that promote positive social interaction and use seating arrangements that encourages student interaction. I observed that these minority students are good candidates as exceptional learners because they might have English language difficulties or a stressful home life. Some considerations that might affect minority students are: “The children don’t try,” “They have no place to study,” “Their parents don’t care,” and “Their culture does not value education.” These are some reasons and excuses I used to explain why these minority students have an achievement gap that separates them from other young Americans. Once I determined that a minority student qualified as an exceptional learner, I embraced and reaffirmed their cultural, ethnic, and linguistic heritage. By building on the students’ backgrounds, I was able to further develop their learning abilities. In the classroom, I will communicate high expectations and a belief in the success for all my students and develop a bond with my students. Additionally, I will help my students to see learning tasks as meaningful. Lastly, I will provide a link between the academically challenging curriculum and the cultural resources a minority student brings to school. Another important step that is required by me is to setup a meeting with the minority student parents. At the meeting with the parents of the minority child, the teacher has to make sure some members of the family can speak English. The teacher must be aware that the prospect of psychological evaluation can cause a great deal of anxiety for the parents. No parent, whether minority or not, wants to hear that their child may have a disability. As the teacher of the minority child who needs to be psychological tested, it is the teacher’s job to recommend that they see the schools guidance counselor. Also, the teacher must convince the parents that this will benefit and be useful in evaluating the strengths and limitations of their child. Parents who understand the nature of psychological testing will be less apprehensive and be able to effectively participate in the test and any resulting services for their child. An important fact that I must mention to the parents is that the actual testing will be administered by a licensed psychologist to obtain information about a student’s learning behavior or mental health. My main goal when advising the parents of the minority child about the need for psychological testing is to promote all the positive things this testing will results will bring.
