Music is integral to human society and allows humans to express and share their emotions with others and also provides relaxation to the mind. Digital technologies have enhanced the reach and quality of music media to many more consumers than what existed with traditional music. While digital music provides much needed convenience, access and quality to the consumers, it also generates concerns for music distribution companies that are affected by the unauthorized distribution of digital music. This paper attempts to provide a review of the pros and cons of digital music and an overview of the latest developments and technology formats for digital music in the present age.

Digital technologies were beneficial in the initial phase when CDs replaced traditional records and allowed users to enjoy an enhanced version of music pieces on their computers and media players. One of the most significant development in the history of digital music was that of MP3 format by Motion Pictures Expert Group (MPEG) in the year 1993 (Giletti). By compressing a large amount of data in its format, MP3 has changed the may music was shared and distributed worldwide. The advantages derived from digital music have been beneficial for both the consumers as well as for the music companies. For consumers, digital music brings much more convenience and quality. For music companies, digital music is easy to distribute and also the maintenance of higher quality is easier for record companies for digitally recorded music. The distribution of music via digital media has now become inevitable. Consumers love digital music which is evident from the influx of the number of digital files available on the internet in MP3 and other formats (Czerwinski, Fromm and Hodes). However, the digital music distribution is a growing cause of concern for the music industry.
Customers are willing to buy and share music online through laptops, mobiles and other digital devices rather than buying CDs and DVDs from physical retail shops.
