Chapter 1 focuses on how ASD is classified and treated. Autism is largely still misunderstood so treatments and classification vary depending on doctor and family feelings. This chapter explores the theories behind the development of ASD and highlights several studies highlighting scientific research into the cause behind Autism. Chapter 2 primarily focuses on assessments at several different levels. The first type of assessment is a screener that is given to children who may be at risk for developmental delays.…
Despite this set of statistics, many are not convinced by the data. They believe that there has been a fundamental flaw in data collection. Reasons include the loosening of diagnostic criteria for autism as well as the fact that the figures were understated years ago as hardly anyone knew what autism was then.…
Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) is characterised by impairments in communication and socialisation, alongside repetitive and stereotyped behaviours (Association Psychiatric Association, 2013). Differences in risk of ASC are associated with socioeconomic disparities, whereby ASC tends to be overrepresented in high socioeconomic status (SES) families. Early clinical (Cox et al., 1975; Finnegan et al., 1979; Hoshino et al., 1982; McCarthy et al., 1979) and population-based studies (Bhasin & Schendel, 2007; Durkin et al. 2010; Lotter, 1967; Treffert, 1970; Williams et al., 2008) have reported positive associations between ASC and SES, measured by parental education, occupation or income. However, other studies (Cialdella & Mamelle, 1989; Croen…

I say this because diagnoses are in general, not very helpful in terms of actual classroom intervention, as there really aren’t uniform intervention for children with particular diagnoses; rather, interventions should be tailored around specific behaviors. Different children with same diagnose will present differently. So, even if the child is misdiagnosed, that really shouldn’t present an issue with intervention in the classroom at least, as interventions are based on behaviors, not diagnosis. Each diagnosis is different with each child, and all diagnoses can be different depending on what the situation is. Children can be diagnose with behavioral issues and others disabilities, and with each of these follows many categorical criteria for services under that individual…

The DSM-V revision website says the reasons for using the umbrella term of “Autism Spectrum Disorder” are 1) the old way isn’t precise enough—different clinicians diagnose the same person with different disorders, and some change their diagnosis of the same symptoms differently from year to year, and 2) autism is defined by a common set of behaviors and it should be characterized by a single name according to…
In resonance to my western lenses, Catarina’s behaviours were out of her control and were heightened by her mother’s death, economic factors, stress, and her marriage (Braveman, & Gottlieb, 2014). In contemporary society, the concept of madness has not changed in terms of what are ‘healthy’ and ‘unhealthy’ behaviours, thoughts and feelings’. (Braveman, & Gottlieb, 2014). However, in contemporary society, ‘madness’ has a label to it; a diagnosis. “Many scholars argue that labels, such as mental illness are used for social and political control, often resulting in harming rather than helping people” (Gambrill, 2014 p. 16). ”…

Occasionally associated with intellectual disability, language impairment or epilepsy, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) includes eight different but related types of disorders (American Psychiatric Association [APA], n.d.). Symptoms that manifest in patients are usually varying in aspects and seriousness, resulting in different levels of impacts in their social life and academic development. This essay demonstrates the writer’s understanding of ASD, with an emphasis on adolescents, and some common teaching and organisational strategies to be adopted in mainstream secondary schools. Autism, Asperger’s syndrome and pervasive developmental disorder (PDD) are several common and well-known types included in ASD (APA, n.d.; APS, 2017). Though ASD affects both children and adults, with a higher prevalence among males, it is classified as a developmental disorder since the onset of the symptoms is usually at the early stage of a child’s development (Australian Psychological Society [APS], 2017).…
Autism is one of the most common yet misunderstood disorders of the modern age. Most Americans do not have a clear understanding of possible causes, what Autism actually is nor possible cures or treatments of this disorder. As autism effects 1 out of every 68 children born in the US annually, there is a large group of individuals whose lives have been touched by this ailment. Despite the large numbers of children and family’s crossing paths with this disorder, it is still not very clearly understood by the average person. An incredibly important step towards the better understanding of this disorder is having the basic facts available for the common man, presented in a way that is easy to understand and able to be parceled out in small components.…
