The Pros And Cons Of Dehumanizing To A Slave

Improved Essays
While it is agreed that owning someone as a slave is dehumanizing to the slave, it is also dehumanizing to the slave owner. However, it is hard to compare who is more dehumanized in this situation because there are many factors that go into each role that cannot be measured. Though both roles are less than human, it is very difficult to determine if they are equally dehumanized (as claimed by Douglass). Owning a slave is dehumanizing to the slave owner because it shows that they are inhumane. Some of the things that really make humans human are their intelligence, awareness, and empathy. When someone owns a slave, it implies that they do not have the capability to be aware of what their actions are doing. It also shows that they are not empathetic

However, in order to preserve the lack of humanity in slaves, slaveholders would not allow them to accomplish these normal human actions. For example, slaves were not permitted to become educated in any way, or to live as families. Consequently, they were not educated enough to think critically, they did not have the time or energy to plan escape, and they could not be husbands or wives. Instead, they continued to be viewed as less than human and not subject to the basic human rights given to other…

“A person who is the property of and wholly subject to another,” is the definition of slavery according to an online dictionary. Growing up, we hate obeying our parents, and I’m sure many of us once told their parents, “I’m not your slave!” when asked to do something. In reality we have absolutely no idea what it is like to be slave. It’s hard to imagine what being a slave is like, since we didn’t exist during those times.…

We are simply treated as cattle to our owners, if a slave were to try and escape his torments of captivity if not killed by his owner when found he would be beaten or whipped then branded by his owner so others would know of his origins if he escaped again. Last week my cousin was given 5 lashes of a whip for accidentally breaking a few eggs while collecting them. How could you justify to me such a harsh and cruel punishment for something so minor. Sometimes us slaves are beaten and tormented for jest by our owners for they are simply bored. If you become injured from the beating you are still expected to work through you injury and work well because if we don’t we will be punished even more harshly for this offense which is not our own fault.…

To illustrate, on auction blocks where they “were stripped, examined, and assigned meaning according to the brutal…slaveholding ideologies” , African-American slaves were dehumanized and “turned into products”. Slaves were denied their unalienable human right to privacy as every detail and flaw were scrutinized to degrade their self-confidence, making them submissive to their masters. Because African-Americas occupied the role of being slaves in American society, they laboriously served their masters like replaceable livestock such as “horses and other cattle” . They were understood to have no virtue or will of their own because of their skin color, making them perfect to control. Furthermore, “[s]lavery…was a system of unchecked brutality, made grotesquely visible on the suffering bodies of the slaves” as the slaveholders used violence to keep their possessions obedient.…

This final paragraph is dedicated to the misconceptions and discrimination regarding slaves. As discussed in previous chapter, slaves were seen as property, a property to do with as a master saw fit. This paper also discussed how having the mindset of being superior over another person can warp the mind and nature of a person. This paragraph will expand on the misconceptions of slaves, which did not fit into the previous two chapters. One aspect that is critically important is the understandings that people had regarding the nature of slaves.…
