Over the last couple of years there have been extensive debates and discussions on whether marijuana should be decriminalized. Canada is divide on the issue of legalization, some individuals consider marijuana a hardcore drug which should remain illegal while others are convinced that not only is it not a drug but rather its medicine. When the Conservative party was in power under the leadership of Stephen Harper, there were little to no talks of legalization of marijuana but that changed when the Liberal party came to power. When Justin Trudeau was elected Prime Minister, one of his campaign pledges was to decriminalize marijuana nationwide. One of the longest standing claims against the use of marijuana is that it has no advantages, and all it does is get you high. Even though studies conducted at perhaps the most prestigious university, Harvard, indicate that marijuana can further reduce symptoms of various medical conditions and can be used a pain medication, but those against it tend to focus on the negative. Marijuana does have its advantages, but it's not a perfect drug, a study conducted by Harvard indicates that marijuana, if inhaled, can irritate lungs and be linked to lung cancer. Marijuana not being legal forces doctors to prescribe prescriptions pills which according to Prof. Fischer of Simon Fraser University, are more addictive and easier to overdose off compared to marijuana. So not only can marijuana be used as medicine it is also safer and less addictive than what is used today. In an article written by the American Cancer Society it states that marijuana can be effective in managing nausea and vomiting from chemotherapy. Although marijuana has become a lot easier to get your hands on over the past several years, it is nevertheless illegal throughout Canada. If marijuana was to be made legal, The Huffington Post estimates it could be worth upwards of 20 billion dollars per year. Those against marijuana argue that it's not worth having more individuals using recreational and medicinal marijuana just to allow the government to obtain more money. The money generated by marijuana should be placed towards educating youths and marijuana user’s on how to stay safe when using medicinal or recreational marijuana. Over the past couple of years Vancouver, according to CBC, has become the weed capital of Canada, so by keeping marijuana illegal we are forcing marijuana users to get it from gangs and not only is that dangerous for the user but it's also dangerous to us because we are giving the gangs more power. We may not see it because we live in a prospering city, Vancouver, but provinces such as Alberta and Manitoba are going job crisis, but according to a CBC that can all change because if marijuana is made legal, it would create 100,000 more jobs throughout Canada. In a study conducted that the University of Alberta, it revealed that the Canadian economy relies on resource harvesting and the price of oil which hasn’t
