Women And Sexual Violence: Date Rape

As a woman, I feel I should be able to go out, have a good time, and dress how I please. Realistically, as a woman, I need to be aware of my surroundings, the company I keep, and how I am presented to other people, and even then I could be taken advantage of. In recent years, statistics show a 25% increase in reported rape and sexual assault. It has been one of the fastest growing crimes in America and has ruined the lives of countless victims. According to RAINN nearly 63% of women have experienced some sort of sexual violence in their lifetime. Not only is rape a horrid crime but it is also one of the hardest to prove. They begin to believe it didn’t happen that way, or maybe they asked for it, or that it was consensual when it wasn’t. A man gets to walk away from a rape satisfied, while women suffer. The term date rape is defined as a form of acquaintance rape. “Date Rape” refers to a rape in which there has been some sort of romantic or potentially sexual relationship between two people. Some people believe that just because you’re married or in a relationship that you cant be raped. Forced sex is an act of violence and aggression. It has nothing to do with love or lust. Healthy relationships are about respect and a man who truly cares about a woman will not pressure her or force her into sexual acts. Alcohol and drugs can play a role in date rapes. Drinking can loosen inhibitions, reduce common sense, and for some people, allow aggressive tendencies to surface. For women, drinking with a man can also make her guard go down and lose control or her own decisions. Date rape drugs can also be slipped into a drink and impossible to detect. This is the most despicable way of taking advantage of a woman because you run the risk of overdosing her and possibly killing her. The next morning she will wake up sick, confused, and terrified. If a woman is raped, it is never her fault. She didn’t ask for it nor should she have to live with its shame. The best way to get to know someone is by meeting in public places or going out with a group of friends. Some men become different people when they drink, and their true colors come out. Many victims begin to feel defined by their rapes, like they are damaged goods. Their lives and plans can become completely altered if they become pregnant, and all because a man needed to relieve himself?
