After the death of Saddam Hussein, many of his supporters didn’t know what to do next, so they formed a group called Al Qaeda. Al Qaeda waged war and attacked Shiite militias who were supported by Iran. After the invasion of US troops, the group seemed to be kept at bay for a while until they regrouped in Syria. Here, they renamed themselves ISIS, the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria. According to The Week the rest of Al Qaeda wasn’t happy with the regrouping because they were forming a new group also, but after a “mini-war amongst themselves,” both groups officially disassociated with each other (Cassis 1). Many corporations, even our government, have been hacked at some point during the last year or two. Cyberterrorism has a large appeal because not only is it cheaper, it can affect a larger group of people quicker. Citizens’ are still violated, but now our privacy is too, and they may not even know it (Weimann 1). As this issue comes to a forefront, so do questions like how do we correctly fight terroristic organizations, with violence or more peaceful means? Is what we are currently doing working? If not, what can we be doing better?
Terrorism hurts sustainability from the economy to the environment to society itself. Each time a physical attack occurs, money has to go to fix damages, which can hurt the economy depending on the magnitude of the damage. If the attack damages the land, it hurts the environment. Finally, society is mostly affected because of the stress, anxiety, anger, and sadness felt. When your home, city, and safety are violated because of a group’s actions, it causes these feelings, as seen with 9/11. If they don’t believe it is, it is important to point out the mistakes made so that we as a country don’t make them again. For example, after 9/11 more people felt eager to invade Iraq because of revengeful viewpoints. We can learn from this not to act in emotion and to analyze every aspect possible before resorting to a violent means. To determine a solution on how to better solve terrorism other than by attacking them, we need to understand the “enemy.” Understanding means learning about the terrorist organization, what they believe in, what their cause is, who they are against, and if peaceful methods like compromises can work. It also means that if an attack happens, not to be set in a belief and waiting for more information before assuming information about an entire group of people. By educating others on this information, more people can have a better understanding and act on their own opinions as well. As Williams says in Long Shadows, “many people don’t take part because they feel that ‘what I do is not going to change anything, therefore I won’t do it’ … if they can’t come together on one accord for some reason, there’ll always be the status quo, nothing will change” (Ury 70). Even though people have differing opinions, it still causes change because a discussion is occurring and the more ideas people have, the better
