Carrying a concealed weapon is the practice of carrying a concealed firearm on one 's person in public. There are several reasons why people feel the need to carry concealed weapons. Some feel wary of the environment in which they live, thanks in part to high crime rates. Some like the assurance that a weapon provides them in the event that a police officer is not available. Others simply like to exercise the right that the Second Amendment has granted them. Concealed carry varies state to state. For example, in Florida one would need a certain permit to carry pepper spray over a certain volume, as it is considered a weapon. However, this isn’t a debate about keeping guns out of the hands of college students completely, rather allowing them in places of academia. Policy change would not impact who can buy a gun and it wouldn’t change the who carries a firearm at parties or bars which tend to be off-campus anyway. “Changing the rules would simply allow the same trained, licenses adults who carry concealed handguns, without incident when not on campus to do so on campus” (Students for Concealed Carry on Campus). Another noteworthy fact, is that “for a combined 100 semesters on 12 different college campuses there has not been a single incident of a student under the influence of drugs or alcohol using or brandishing a weapon on campus, a single resulting suicide, a gun theft, or a resulting gun accident” (Students for Concealed Carry on Campus). There are valid points to both sides of the argument. However, it is my belief that major policy change needs to happen to allow concealed carry on college campuses. This policy change needs to include mandatory gun handling courses for concealed carry permit holders for every state, not just some. It would also be beneficial for colleges to require a separate gun proficiency course for those wanting to carry on campus. Additionally, the policy should stipulate that under no circumstances should a student who lives in a dorm be keeping a firearm in their room. It is my belief that this policy change would improve campus security and create a safer learning environment for
