There is a lot of debate whether or not dirty hands are necessary for politics. Snowden brings out both the bad and the good that many political science students are studying at the moment. Dirty hands is not a new topic that recently came out, but one that is becoming more complex as time goes on with new ideologies forming and new technology developing. Each new characteristic is making the debate more challenging to answer. On one hand, people say it is necessary, especially if it means sacrificing a few in order to save the many. The other side may argue that it is not necessary it will probably not change the end result in some cases. One example given in Michael Walzers paper is about a terrorist being captured and a political leader needs to decide if they should torture the person in order to find the locations of the bombs. In the end, this will save many people but may take away rights from people when the government sees right. This can bring other problems within society as citizens may have less trust in the state or fear it.
With this topic, there is a large ethical dilemma that one must consider when debating these sides. Mass surveillance is also a good topic. This is becoming a large problem is a lot of societies, where governments are spying on their own citizens. As a result, it is causing uprisings in some places against the government, which brings to question is it worth sacrificing privacy to ensure the safety of people?
