The Importance Of Cheating In High School

“In a survey of 24,000 students at 70 high schools,” Donald McCabe found “64 percent of students admitted to cheating on a test, 50 percent admitted to plagiarism and 95 percent said they participated in some form of cheating.” Some people believe that cheating in our high school is unconstitutional, however, with common core our educational system has changed from context or teacher-centered learning to student-centered learning, which emphasizes the final grade. This means that students are not learning as much but still striving for the perfect grade. The Huffpost College stated that, “While most students will call plagiarism, cheating, many of them will define plagiarism in a way that allows them to indirectly copy the work of others.” Therefore, students do not view cheating as dishonest but rather as a way to apply their resources to their academic success. Within our four years of high school students are expected to play sports, be part of clubs, succeed in school, and figure out what job career they want to study in college. With students being in school until 3 pm everyday that only leaves them seven hours to do homework, practice, and eat. The average time spent doing homework every day is three and half-hours each day. This means a student that is in a sport won’t be getting home until about 5 or 6 pm and then will not be done with homework until 9:30 pm. Thus giving them only 30 minutes to eat or do anything else they would want to do. This also gives many students very little time to have a social life. This perfectly shows how students have changed their definitions of cheating to rather use their resources. Many students do not view cheating as dishonest, but rather their only way to ensure that they have the academic success our society
