Since the first established law for charter schools was passed in 1991 by Minnesota, charters have rapidly opened all over the country. The topic of charter schools these past ten years has been discussed plenty of times by politicians on how to better the education system. The heavy controversy surrounding charter schools revolves around its competition with the public school system. The opponent for public schools were private schools that offered accelerated education, although that education came with a price. As stated before now charters have become the opponent for public schools, were they offer an accelerated education for free. Today some 6,700 of them serve nearly three million students almost 6% of U.S. public-school enrollment” (Finn 1). Although many haven’t heard of them until 2013 when, “President Obama indicated the prominence of charter schools in his State of the Union address when he called for creating more of them” (Pitre 1). Thus charters have been a current topic that plenty of politicians have been discussing for the last few years. U.S Secretary of Education Arne Duncan has “’characterized charter schools as one of the most profound changes in education’” (Pitre 1). Although charters may be changing the education system in a good way in the government’s eyes, some parents express differently. Thus some adults, say how do charters help the communities if they are forcing failing schools to close, but the charters are failing as well. Although this is true for some areas in the country, but not all charters are bad, just like the public schools in their area. Just as public schools have struggles, charters as well have the same struggles of trying to be the best–achieving schools. Finn gives us a great example “some of the country’s highest-achieving schools are charters, but so are some of the worst” (6).
