“If the freedom of speech is taken away then dumb and silent we may be led, like sheep to the slaughter”- George Washington, these words discoursed are just as valid today as when they were first spoken. In present time censorship obstructs our freedom of speech and disrupts our ability to create our own distinct voice. Currently the exact meaning indicates that censorship is the suppression or prohibition of any part of any book, film, and news that is considered obscene, politically unacceptable, or a threat to security. To add on, this impedes one’s own opinion, individuality, as well as self expression yet, censorship is sometimes in the interest of the public and the nation, however it is detrimental that the public has the right to freely exercise their first amendment and censorship will prohibit this amendment to an extent. We the people should be able to watch what we please but it seems as if the government has decided to protect us from information we never asked to be protected from. If someone chooses to seek out questionable information by choice, then that is that own person’s business alone.
