Illegal to Burn the U.S. Flag “The Congress and the states shall have the power to prohibit the physical desecration of the flag of the United States.” That was the proposed constitutional amendment that was sent before the Constitution subcommittee on May 25th, 1995. The amendment passed the subcommittee and then was presented before the full Judiciary Committee. The amendment was in response to the Supreme Court rulings in 1989 and 1990 that demolished federal and state statutes prohibiting flag desecration. This was seen as an obstruction to the First Amendment which protects free speech and expression.…

In the law case Texas vs Johnson, Johnson burnt an American in protest of a potential nuclear war and should have been placed in jail. There are several reasons why he should have gone even though the court didn’t aprove because he was “protected” by the second amendment. The American flag is a symbol of our nation and should be respected. If a non-American would have done this, they would have been thrown in jail. Due to public endangerment, disrespect and improper acknowledgement, he should have been thrown in jail.…

Since most disapprove of flag burning, the government should have a right to ban it (Whitman). The Confederate flag is a symbol that everyone seems to have an opinion on. Some people are disgusted by the flag and claim that it represents hate and racism. These people feel like it should not be flown in public places and should only be displayed in historical museums, away from the public eye. Other people, though, look upon the Confederate flag and see a sense of pride and heritage, and strongly disagree with the accusations that accompany flying this particular symbol. Although the confederate flag is the subject of much controversy, it and symbols representing the Southern States should not be removed from the public eye because remembering the flag helps us to remember the sacrifices that our ancestors made, encompassing the views of an entire race or region based on the actions of a minority of the population only leads to stereotypes and misinterpretation, and reconciling between the different…
