The Pros And Cons Of Athenian Democracy

273 Words 2 Pages
Athens is not democratic. Athens is thought to be the first government to use democracy. We are going to examine what doesn't make Athens a democracy, and examine all of the facts that support this opinion. We will discuss the population, the Athenian constitution, and the opinions of experts.

The opinions of experts are some of the most trustworthy sources available. One source is from Professor Hansen, a professor of philology and classics at the University of Copenhagen, and is considered a leading expert in Athenian democracy. He writes that Demokratia was the rule by male citizens only. Furthermore evidence from Wealthy Hellas, a book written by Professor Josiah Ober, states that only twelve percent of the population was able to vote.
